Help needed with posts
#1
Hello Foccer's, can someone tell me how you put words in between pictures, can't seem to work out how to separate photos with individual descriptions and also how do you put a line through a word ? Does this even make sense to anyone or is there no hope for this technophobe?. :o

Never figured out how to put text between pics uploading straight from the computer, so I've switched to using photobucket. Select the image. On the right there are some options. I double-click on the IMG option, then paste into my post on here. Then you can easily add text underneath. Do the same to add more pics and so on. If you keep two windows open, one for FOC-U, and one for photobucket, it's easy to switch between pics and text as you go. Hope this helps.

Edit...as nick says.

I've always wondered this & if you upload pics like me by choosing file & then clicking on a pic stored in your computer then i dont think it works coz the pic doesnt appear until you hit post.....so that stops you putting in the text.

Now theres this IMG code thing where basically it seems to be a code that links to where the pic is stored ie if the pic is yamaha uk website then the foc-u website just plucks it from that site by reading the code....ok im talking normal speak here as im not a computer guru...but anyway when you just put the code in on your post it is a code on the screen..just like when you write on the screen to post.....so you can click below the code & type as normal.

So you have codes with writing below them.

Then by magic when you hit post the codes turn into pictures.

I havent quite figured out how to get the IMG code for a pic thats already in my computer or ipad though.....i think they must have one.......but dunno. :\

Also...just trying to get this stuff out there so the ones in the know can confirm it......when we upload a pic our old fashioned way i believe it stays on foc-u forever unless deleted....so it takes up storage space & i suppose foc-u has a limited allocated amount of storage space in cyberspace.

When we use an IMG code then instead of storing the photo on Foc-U it is merely displaying it so takes up much less valuable storage space....the storage is done by the hosting site ie photobucket.

Buuuuut when someone decides to delete a pic from photobucket because photobucket is saying "youve reached max storage, please upgrade to photobucket plus & give us money".........then it is automatically deleted from foc-u also as it was only acting like a mirror...but theres no subject left to reflect........so that could be problematic for future reference of posts where folk have put up pics????

Am i even remotely close to the mark there on that one?????

Putting a line through a word (take it you mean crossing-out so you can still see the original word?) - in "reply", you get the options top left: B=bold, I=italic, u=underline, S= strikethrough. So highlight the word you want to modify then click the relevant modification. Strikethrough is the one you want in this case.

Thanks fellas, I'll see if I can get my head around it, just one thing I don't understand though Nick, when I attempt this, why do I need to open my windows ?

You are looking at this forum in a window. If you click on "file" top left of your screen, among the options is "new window". Click this and you now have 2 windows running. Go to "home" (little house logo on your toolbar) and open photobucket or whatever site you want. I find it useful to then minimise whichever window I'm not posting in at that particular moment. So maximise in photobucket, copy IMG, minimise that window, and post in FOC-U with that window on maximise (full screen).
You can also select which of the windows you want by clicking on the internet logo at the bottom of the screen.

Not sure I'm great at explaining this as it's all pretty new to me too  :lol

And talking of clicking - piss taking Foccer  :rollin

There are three methods of attaching photos to posts; Attachments, Aeva Media and Hotlinking

Attachments - This is done by using the "Additional Options..." link underneath the text area that you enter your post (except when using Quick Post). These images are tagged on to the end of your post and are uploaded to the FOC-U site. FOC-U hosts them until the systems administrators remove them (if ever). This is technically a finite resource for them, but I'm uncertain as to how much of an issue it is at current. You are also restricted to a maximum of 4 attachments per post. Edit / Note - on some peoples computers, these do not show correctly as the browser does not render a preview of the image and instead offers up the image as a download for the end use. This is typically nothing to do with your post and is beyond your control for this method

Aeva Media - This allows an image to be embedded in a post in line with text and the image will show in the Media section of the site. It also allows you to add a title and description to the image. You can have as many as you like (in theory) and these are again uploaded to and hosted by FOC-U. They are removed if the administrators decide to remove them. The Aeva Media method is used using the [Image: smg.gif] icon above the text area for entering a post. It is currently the 5th option on the second line

Hotlinking - This is the method that Nick was referring to when talking about photobucket. This allows you to again embed an image in line with text, but the source of the image is from a different location on the web - you can not use a file direct from your computer unless uploading it to a 3rd party location (i.e. photobucket). Some sites prevent hotlinking so this may result in a few issues (dedicated sites like photobucket obviously don't). In addition, as the source is not FOC-U, you may have little control over the persistence of the image whereby it may be deleted. This can cause issues in old threads, especially for guides, if someone tries to view the thread and all the helpful images are gone...

All of the posts are also controlled by BBCode - this is a special form of web syntax designed to allow safe text formatting and prevent people from doing anything harmful with raw HTML (on which BBCode is mostly based). The basics, such as bold, italics, underline and strikethrough can easily be controlled this way as demonstrated below in the code segment

Code:
[b]bold[/b]
[i]italics[/i],
[u]underline[/u]
[s]strikethrough[/s]

OK, cheers Deadeye, that seems to sound a bit easier for me to forget understand....See what I did there :lol
However, clicking on the Aeva Media icon does nothing at all. :\ Until I click off the site and it appears, god I hate computers. :wall

When you post a reply, above the box where you type there's the smileys and then a row of buttons.  The one on the far right is marked 'Toggle View' if you hover your mouse over it.  Click on that and something happens.  Not sure what but it makes life easier.  Then what you type is the same as what will appear, so if you want to add a picture with text under it and then another picture, you'll type:
The IMG code for the picture, either by linking to a picture on Photobucket or similar or by uploading your picture, then
The text that you want to put in, then
the IMG code for the next picture
and so on.  If you hit Preview before you post, you'll be able to see if you got it right.

The Aeva Media button opens a new window in your current browser - if it doesn't get immediate focus (brought to the front of your screen) then you should be able to select it on the task bar

The "Toggle View" button that rustyrider is referring to toggles whether you can see the underlying BBCode for your post, or whether the browser renders it as a preview Smile

Toggle view also allows you to right click and paste text or the URL of the picture you want to link to.  Without hitting toggle view first, right clicking doesn't give you the option to paste but gives you something else I don't understand..... (although it appears Dead Eye does).

That's strange... I can right click and paste regardless of the toggle view setting :\

Odd, unless I click toggle view, right click gives me this

But if I click toggle view, then right clicking gives me this

Ah, looks like its falling back to an earlier HTML version to comply with an older Windows or browser installation

On your first example its treating the text area as a frame which brings up a different context menu. In the second example you have reverted to a basic text area which allows the Cut - Copy - Paste controls.

I'm running Windows 8 and Firefox v27.0.1 and due to HTML5 (I assume - may be some fancy Javascript in there as well), it allows both instances of Toggle View to remain as a text area so I keep the Cut - Copy - Paste controls...

And now I have successfully made a post that should cure insomnia Big Grin

Also running Firefox 27.0.1 but under Windows XP so that may be the difference.

I don't need a post to give me insomnia, I was up at 5 this morning and I don't do early starts.  I normally regard 5am as late last night not early this morning and I'm knackered......
