I cant find a post. I am 12 stone dead. how much will it cost to get my rear end done. I have had it from new and 26,000 miles later it must be due. I had my front end done by a bloke called daren. really sorted me out up the mct place. he said my rear is floppy. I don't want to pay the earth, but I do like it firm. any ideas please?
:eek ooh argh Mrs, too many innuendos for my liking.
It's not just me then....
Do a search on 'rear shock' instead.
Realistically to refurb your shock you're looking at approximately £130ish incl. postage plus the bike off the road for at least a week, then you'll need someone to remove and refit it.
As you're not so keen on attempting an air filter change i'm gonna hazard a guess it won't be you doing it, so it would also be the simplest way to go.
Or you can go for the upgrade, either by modding an R6 or an FZS1000 shock, but again, much more work involved, or simply buy an aftermarket shock from probably a minimum £300+.
I struck lucky by managing to get an already refurbed shock on here, courtesy of 'Fuzzy', so personally had a bit of a result, but in reality it's gonna cost you a few hundred quid unless you can manage to find one as well, which i doubt.

I've gone for re-modding a thou shock I picked up cheap for £25, changing the spring out for a heavier poundage (£30) and making some alterations to the frame. cheapest way I think but depends on what you can find/how much you want to pay etc.
Spider, you are going to have to hook up with me sometime, we're not a lillion miles away, i'm in Harlow, and have tools and a small garage.
Air filter, reckon we could do that in around 40minutes start/finish.
Shock. Either get one off ebay that has less miles, for a quick swap, chances are that it won be much better, or modify an R6 shock (this is what i'm currently in the process of). I have to say that my shock at 48,000 miles actually isnt too bad, so maybe just som adjustment would improve things, that would take 5 minutes whilst doing your air filter.
A floppy rear may not be the fault of the shock itself.
With the bike on the centre stand put your chest on the saddle, wrap your arms around and try pulling the rear wheel up. There is always a bit of free play in the shock linkages and the large amount of leverage means that translates to a couple of mm movement at the axle, but if the bearings in there have been neglected there could well be a lot more slop than that.
I'd check that before spending money on a replacement shock.
Mine had an oil leak coming out of the centre rod, you could touch it and see if there's any oil there at all, 'cos if there is then you could just be bouncing about on the spring.

As far as I know, 'WezDavo' might be the only person on the Board who has / might have owned all three - standard, modded Fazer 1000 and R6 rear shocks on his bike, so could offer the best advice.
If you stick with standard, I think Hans of Caledonian Engineering still rebuilds standard shocks at a decent price
thank you for info. 300 for shock is scary. at the end of the day its a spring. will keep my eyes open for a thousand one. or might bite the bullet and pay 300 for the nitrogen one or similer

Shocks and brake discs are not kind to finances, they're not forgiving at all.

Actually the spring is just that.......a spring.
That bit is probably working completely fine, it's the damping part that's gone tits up.

I just fitted an FG Gubellini shock to my bike last week. It is a worthwhile up grade. And darrsi is bang on, the spring is probably fine. The standard hydrolic part is poor.
Not quite sure what to do with my early mid-life crisis. Ideas on a post card to P.O.BOX 150...
