inside garage roof
#1
Hi

i want to insulate my garage roof the same way ive done the back of the door which is by using 1" thicke polystreyne board from wickes.

I will do it by putting batterns along the roof joyce, then sliding the poly board along on top of them. It will mean that the poly board will be about an inch away from the ply (to create an air gap)

I wont do this between every joyce (due to shelves being in the way) but i will do 3/4 of the garage.

Will it make the roof sweat, thus create mold and rot???

In the summer, when you put you hand a few inches from the ply in the picture...it is hot!

Having watched Holmes on Homes, a Canadian builderI have learnt you have to stop the warmer air from the garage getting to the cold side between the polystyrene and the roof boards.

So once the polystyrene is pushed in tight against the joists it need to be sealed plastic sheeting and tape is what he uses.

In Britain I believe after the lessons learned in the seventies you have to have ventilation between the insulation and the underside of the roof.

just done my man cave 5 x 4 metres, 65 mm gap filled it with kingspan kooltherm of e bay. 50mm thick, so a 15mm gap, then plaster boarded and plastered, its a timber frame,? waiting to see what happens. if it cracks going to put up coving to cover it, the info I found was very different from person to person, good luck m8. I just went for it,  fingers crossed the plaster is not drying to quick. Wink

what about sticking it on with foam? if you get a gun for it you can controll the amount much better and should be sealed when done.

:eek    Bear in mind that polystyrene gives off toxic (Killer) fumes when burning .. never a good idea inside 'any' building .. in my opinion.  Might even be illegal?  Stop and talk to the Firemen first.
