Brake Calipers
#1
I keep stumbling on posts about blue dot brake calipers. So now I need to ask, what are they?

They are the standard fitment front brake calipers for the fzs 600 and fzs 1000, the fzs1000 also has a blue dot rear caliper (which many 600 owners retrofit to their bikes as it is apparently better than the standard 600 rear caliper and is almost a direct fit, requires a small amount of fileing to the caliper bracket so that the bolts line up, they are notoriously hard to find though!).

The blue dot refers to the blue anodised piston caps.  Wink  for example this front caliper: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-FZS600-...3f0418734f

It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.

Ok, so the blue dot is just to see what caliper it is, but the blue dot is better than standard. So what's this gold dot I stumbled upon? Is gold the standard fitting on the rear?

The standard 600 rear has no anodised "dot" so yes it is the easiest way to differentiate between if it has a standard 600 rear caliper or the 1000 rear caliper instead.

The gold dot caliper, where the piston cap is anodised gold instead of blue is off the newer model fazers I believe and are NOT useable as replacements for the 600 calipers as the bolts do not line up.

I believe there are Blue, Silver and Gold variants. The Blue being the worst of the three (but still fantastic calipers). The Silver and Gold are subsequent models? Usually find these on newer / more powerful models like the R1 etc

Yes,

As deadeye says, a little look on ebay shows the silver spot ones to be from the newer gen2 fazers and the gold spot calipers seem to be from the newer generations of r1.

The blue spot calipers on the front of the fzs600 98 - 03 and the front fzs 1000 gen1 were from the earlier r1's and are amazing so no need to try and upgrade them.

The only caliper people really change is the standard rear 600 caliper for the gen1 fzs 1000 rear but they are so hard to come by that you very rarely see them for sale.
