Oil consumption on mine was about 300cc per thousand miles and there was still plenty of power, but it sounded like an old diesel engine. A change of camchain might have been all it needed, but I thought the noises were more like piston slap in which case the overhaul would have become quite expensive and time-consuming. When a cheap second-hand engine became available only a few miles away from me I figured a swap was the sensible solution.
Sadly, that unit turned out to be one with a duff second gear so I ended up swapping again a year later. :'(

Mine had done 24k mile before it needed a new engine - but that was because I'd used it to learn clutchless up (and down) gear changes. It developed a nasty habit of dropping into neutral when upchanging between 2nd and 3rd - not good in the middle of an overtake  :rollin you look like a right twat sitting alongside a cage with the engine revving its nuts off Big Grin
