Front sprocket issues again
#21
The sprocket fix is still holding after 2100 miles,  Smile  which included some lively miles playing with a fellow on a s1000rr after a losing a R1 on the coast roads near home. The s1000rr rider was shocked when he realised he was trying to stay with a 600, when I stopped at a busy cross roads,
This was the conversation
S1000rr rider “Didn’t realise those Fazer 1000s were that quick" My reply "Its a 600" silence and then he says "Jesus you must be ringing its neck"  :rollin  We had a great time for the next 15 miles.
Anyway back to my issues with Yamaha Ireland (Danfay) I took them up on the offer after trying but failing to get them, first to give me the parts at half cost price and then tried for half the trade price. I gave up my haggling when I was asked if I was going to take the offer or not. I suppose after 73000 miles I was lucky to get what I got.
This is the list of parts I ordered:
Quantity          Part number    Part name
1          5DM-11181-00          GASKET, CYLINDER HEAD
1          5DM-11351-00          GASKET, CYLINDER
1          4HM-12213-00          GASKET, TENSIONER CASE
4          90430-10188              GASKET - OIL DELIVERY PIPE
4          3YF-14613-01            GASKET, EXHAUST PIPE
1          93210-12152              O-RING – CRANKCASE
1          90430-06166              GASKET – CRANKCASE
1          93210-06422              O-RING – CRANKCASE
1          4TV-15461-00            GASKET, CRANKCASE COVER
1          4TV-15462-00            GASKET, CRANKCASE COVER
1          93210-48364              O-RING – CLUTCH
1          4TV-17421-00            AXLE, DRIVE
1          93440-30077              CIRCLIP - AXEL DRIVE
1          93102-35368              OIL SEAL - AXEL DRIVE
1          90891-10124              SPROCKET NUT, WASHER, KIT
1          4JH-16340-00            PUSH LEVER ASSY
1          4YR-15427-00            COVER CAP
1          90890-85508-00          TUBE YAMAHA BOND 1215

I have the parts now, but will not do anything unless my fix fails. Interestingly I measured the threads on the new shaft and they measured 17.80mm. I found the measurements I took when my sprocket fell off originally and it was 17.35mm

Good news  :thumbup  Done about 3.5k on mine with the new nut and dodgy welding and it's holding up well.  I'm probably going to need a new chain/sprocket set soo though.

Thanks for the post..... just putting my Fazer back together and was looking at all the mod ideas..... so really useful.
I may be wrong, but did  i read somewhere about a different sprocket being released by Yamaha that was indented to take a wider nut?  I think it came out as a 'service update' in 2005?
The nut & washer kit went up from 9mm to 12mm on part number... 90891-10124, but I cant find the part number for the sprocket (if it exists)?
Only had the nut fail once since 2003... but.... belt n braces.... lol

I have never heard of a modified sprocket. I searched the American sites as the thundercat has the same sprocket and problems, but could only find mention of the FZ600 and that gave the modified nut. I am wondering, since Yamaha Ireland gave me the parts at half price it might open the door for those in the UK to do the same as a precedence has now been set.  Most people I spoke to are amazed I got anything, especially from Yamaha Ireland after 9 years and over 70000 miles. Anyway I'm not complaining to much.
I will keep the forum updated on how long my fix will last. It would be interesting if anybody else has tried the fix I posted in the downloads.

I doubt it. If you look at Limax2's excellent drawing of the old and new nuts you can see the new one makes full use of all the thread available on the shaft.

I know this is an old thread but any chance someone can point me in the right direction to obtain the "Downloads » Manuals » FZS600 Fazer » How I fixed my Sprocket nut problem" write up as i can not seem to find it
