Gen2 front fork travel ?

All is well and this mornings "test session" was one of the best rides I've had on the bike in quite some time

My question, is how far will the front forks travel? Do they completely go to the bottom of the chrome tube or will they stop before this?
I ask because the man say's to get the cable tie to stop around 10mm from the bottom of the travel. I've got it about 15mm but the preload is virtually right out and me being 14 stone in me undies I'd have thought I would need a fair bit of preload for my weight and I'm wondering if I am in fact bottoming out.

I have r1 forks on my gen 1 and have been wondering that exact same thing for years now!

i too have R1 forks on my gen 1 ive set all the sag setting perfect and it feels very nice but i deffo dont use all the travel not within the 10mm from the bottom, maybe because ive uprated my springs but im sure you are aware R1 legs are shorter than stock so id rather not use the full leg otherwise ill headbut the tarmac.

I always set my preload to get  a certain mm of rider and static sag....rather than use all of fork travel.Have never felt forks bottom out either.Bike would jump over a bump if that happened...nasty  possibilities...

Have I got this right?

The service manual says fork travel is 130mm. So if I put the bike on the center stand and push back so the front is in the air, it's  130mm from that point right?

Which would mean the stop is around 10mm shorter than the chrome tube is so by using the cable tie methiod you have to add 10 mm to any measurements!

If you set sag  to recomended mm, you wont necesarily use all your fork travel...you do need some for emergency braking for example. K tech suggested sag measurements to me, they didnt work it out as using all the fork travel as far as I know ...
If your springs are weight matched they surely will travel less than with weker springs ??... so is your method the correct one ?( I aint full read the link BTW ! )

Either way is probably right (or wrong :lol)
By adding 10mm to my cable tie method I'm now showing only three rings so much more likely I'd have thought.
I haven't ridden it yet, but It rode well with supersoft preload - strange.
It'll get a good test tomorrow, off to the Eifle Mountains/ Mosel valley for the weekend. Think I'll put a spanner in me pocket for on the road adjustments
