What tail pack?
#1
Hi all, I am doing a tour of ireland in a few weeks with a mate.
I m looking for a tail pack to accompany my Knox backpack but cant decide what one..

at the moment i am torn between an Oxford X40 or X30 or even the kriega us30 combo.
I like the quick release ability of all 3 packs and that is what draws me the most as i may need to take it off possibly multiple times in a day.

I am swaying more towards the Kriega at the present time..

Your thoughts?
Lord,
Grant me the WD-40 to move those things that are stuck, the Duck tape to fasten those things that are loose, And the wisdom to know the difference.

I bought an Oxford tailpack off the ebay, 2nd hand, just like this one

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V...ink:top:en

Good things about it are:
2 of the side pockets are expandable  -you could use them to pack some cans of Guiness on your way back  8)
The 4 external pockets are good for keeping stuff like chain lube seperate from the rest of your kit. Theres plenty of room for putting drink and are easily accessable without having to undo any straps/bungees to get at them.
I actually think this model is better than the currect ones as the side pockets are expandable.
The only downside is the rucksac straps arent very good if you have expanded the main compartment as the top straps aren't then attached to the top of the bag.

There is loads of decent luggage on ebay, I've also bought a tankbag off there also , 2nd hand, but it was as good as new.

cheers for the reply. What are they like with regard to taking it off and putting it back on again?  That is my main interest in the ones I have been looking at because they have quick release.

The safest asumption with Ireland is that its going to be pissing down with rain the whole time you are there. The most important feature of your tailpack will be how waterproof it is. I'd grab a cheap and cheerful sailing dry sack from a specialist shop or ebay. You will need a cargo net or straps to hold it down and then you are in business. a 25L likes this one is £14 posted

A bit of a faff. I bought it for a Street Triple and that was useless for luggage as the pipes were in the way and no bungee hooks. A lot depends on the bike. If its got places to tie the pack down too its a quick job.

I put a piece of plywood in the bottom of the pack to give a more stable base so it sits on the bike better and doesnt move.
Also I pack my kit in a drybag, even in the topbox, as you can squish all the air out and end up with a compact item. If I just loaded up the topbox without that I cant get as much stuff in. Same goes for a tailpack.

I used an Oxford tailpack for a couple of tours of Ireland. Great bit of kit. Comes with a waterproof cover or put a bin liner inside it before you pack if you really want it waterproof. Easy on and easy off. Can't fault them. Cheap 2nd hand on ebay too.

Kriega is the best, dead posh but expensive too cos of the snob value. Keep an eye out and you'll get an Oxford for peanuts.

Before I got a topbox for putting stuff securely away on days out, I just strapped a kitbag to the bike. The Fazer8 has grabrails which makes this easy as it gives a flat platform with plywood in the bottom of the kitbag to make it all stable. This bag is expandable 40/60l and has external pockets. 2 tie down straps over the bag around the grab rail and a bungee at the back to stop it creeping forward, took about 60 seconds to put it on.  A lot depends on the bike.
