.................after the mods.
front end
suspension running full front preload (.92kg/mm), min rear. comp 7/14, rebound 4 off max, 7.5wt + 100mm air gap.
initial thoughts are more rear preload needed, and the front was slapping off some of the bumps. the 'take your hands off the bars whilst slowing down' test showed a very slight shimmy @35-ish.
ivans
mine always wheelied in first on the power, but 2nd gear mono-ing is soooo much easier. 4.5k, dip the clutch and wahey! and much more controllable than before, feels like the hand of god keeping the front wheel up.
5 and 6th gear roll ons feel alot stronger too.
The problem with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other people's money!
What mod's other than suspension? Mine comes up in 2nd without abusing the clutch (also my favourite gear for showing off). 3rd is possible but clutch abuse needed & you are really shifting by the time the front comes down! :eek Beginning to think it's already got Ivans kit fitted???
ooooh! wave that willy.
i was offering a comparison, before and after type of thing. not a definative throttle wankers guide to wheelying.
hit a crest fast enough in 5th and mine wheelys on the power.
and fyi, putting 50hp through the transmission or nearly 100hp, which is more hamfisted.

Maybe we need to confirm that, Graham, before I go ahead and order parts for April?
Simple enough to do. Remove one of the carb tops (#2 is usually easiest) and remove the throttle slide. Take out the needle and if it has SD-129/130 stamped around the top, it's standard.
If find anything else, needle-wise, we can determine later exactly what you have fitted. Another clue before you get to the needle is whether the slide spring has been clipped.
Mike
Okay cheers Mike, will take a look over the next few days.
They're a bit touchy on here aren't they!
not everyone....I rarely get excited and abuse people !
I always find the wheely threads intresting cos mine aint prone to it ...in spite of full monty ( 138 at rear wheel). I must be just too good on the throttle...!
even at cadwell at full power it never wheelied...whereas my speed triple is the opposite...very prone to 12 " wheelies just from quick throttle opening .
I actually dont like to pull wheelies though , its a loss of drive, loss of control etc...maybe why I dont go chasing them ??

If you feel that you need a firmer ride try increasing the compression damping. I had my front forks set on max preload when I first got the bike because I didn't know about sag and assumed that because I was heavy and liked a firm ride this was the way to go. After a suspension setup session with an ex-racer I now have 3-4 rings showing and am using increased compression damping to give the quality of ride that I like and it's much improved. Another option to improve the action of a soft shock is to buy a £15 jack-up kit from ebay, as well as improving the handling the slightly revised suspension geometry helps firm the shocks action.

R1 front end conversion (linear springs)
rear shock has a properly matched spring (linear) and shorter dogs.
i used to run 15mm through the yokes on the standard forks (stiffer springs), however the R1 forks are 45mm shorter, so in effect have dropped the front by another 30mm, so have maxed front preload and min'd the rear to get the attitude of the bike somewhere near standard (but lower).
when the weather picks up i will take it to a local r/bout where i'll set the rear ride height up properly (for me).
and insulting people..........just jocular banter...........atm!
6.30 in, how to wheelie a fazer 1000

Oi You,sadlonelygit can we have some piccies of your Kat on a new thread as I had an 1100 SZX and still rate the looks
well you're going to be disappointed with mine, it's a '86 750SE with 1052 in there

Taking advantage of the weather here just had a couple of rides with a full monty and one of Lukes R6 shocks but same old front end as yet.
Ivanised. It is like having a different motor ,the holes I could sit and bimble along in are gone, almost feels like the crank had been lightened, it just wants to rev and now flies through the mid range or what used to be the mid range . I havent ridden the bike for months but remember it as a motor with defined rev ranges . Now its very linear and quick to 10k in 6th, the old top end rush doesnt seem as strong now the dips have dissapeared.
I think that thought only occurred at the top end of 5th & 6th in which case its pish as I didnt notice the first four gears fly through.
I'm well chuffed and might even get a dyno run to see if its better than the R1 I had, 134 as std and 138 with jetting and RS3 can.
Handling wise, Lukes R6 shock mod is plush and makes the front feel even worse :\ maybe I should learn this wheelie thing , I lifted my forks another 10mm to 20mm and had a nice easy handling bike . So still 20mm to play with to get to R1 forks ride height which I hope will, with the extra weight over the front, improve the fork action.
I doubt I will ever achieve the ride quality I want from the std forks but will confidently predict an increase in fuel consumption as a result of fitting the Ivans kit :rollin
Looking at the video, it seems doing wheelies results in more petrol :evil :lol
first proper ride......... .................after the mods.
You're keen ! I would never take sloppy seconds after the beerslag !! :b
Better to stand and look a fool than speak and prove it !
If it aint broke, I'll fix it till it is !!
