Hi,

I just passed my DAS test on 11/11/11 (a nice binary date there) and I have just bought a W reg FZS600.

First bike with an engine, and I love it. It's in pretty mint condition, with 20k on the clock and a service history to back it up.

I wanted a Thundercat originally, but finding a clean example was proving difficult, plus when I sat on one, I felt quite ostentatious (and a bit silly)

Sat on the Fazer, felt wicked, felt better when I was riding it. Feel amazing for buying it.

Few questions:-

What are ideal cruising revs?

What are some good all weather tyres?? (ones that last would be great)

Is there anything about it I need to know, any weird things that if I don't do, will surely kill it (no manual was supplied, but gonna get a Haynes one)

welcome..... front brakes require regular servicing as they are prone to seize speciaaly if winter riding , beware if service  correctly  dont grab a hand full of brake lever or youl be over the handlebars or lose front end, they are the best brakes out there, get braided hoses if you still have rubber hoses type to brakes.... I think there is a link to a manual on here some where.

If ridden in winter, hose down with cold water after every trip, ans spray liberally with WD40 or similar.. all weather  biker offer an anti corrosive treatment.

change oil every 4000 miles  i use halfords semi  synthetic bike oil

tyres... loads of advice on here have a good read as it depend on annual mileage you do.

Have ordered Scott Oiler 364 to protect against corrosion, as well as a lovely heavy duty cover.

Obviously with a liquid cooled engine it will require some anti-freeze in there as the nights start to drop below zero. Will any do, or do I need a special one??

any anti freeze suitable for alli engines will do  but ask question in general and im sure youl get  right answer

I'm still riding on the rubber, and my friend who rides a face lift fazer raves about them


but what is the gain on swapping for braided hoses? my local garage said it was more of a look thing over added breaking power

From my admittedly unreliable memory, I think Yamaha recommend replacing them every 4 years. If you swapped to braided you'd notice the brakes feeling much firmer, but if your existing hoses aren't so spongy that you can pull the lever right back to the bar, they don't leak and you're happy with the feel there's no real need to change them.

My Brakes seem fine. I think what it might need is grippier tyres. However, my policeman friend told me that riding in this weather on those will make me a better rider, and are only worth replacing when they are old. These have tons of mileage left and are relatively new . . . . .

Still getting used to everything.
