Stainless steel downpipes - maintainance?
#1
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I can't find it. I have stainless downpipes on my FZS600 mark 1, and I let them get in a bit of a state. I've had them off and been getting the rust off with a whirly wire brush drill attachment. It's leaving them very tarnished still though and I'm wondering what to do. Stainless means stainless all the way through, not just a coating like chroming, right?

My options are:

Nowt, leave it skanky
sandpaper, but this takes material off
Paint - but I seem to remember that stainless doesn't take paint well?

Cheers if anyone can help.

Don't seem very stainless to me! I'd be tempted to use high temperature matt black paint and be done with it

I agree, I have a stainless scorpion pipe and other than a bit of heat discolouration there should be no rust. That's why we are ripped off paying extra £'s for stainless. Big Grin

Yes I'm not sure the manufacturer quite understands the phrase 'stainless' tbf.

Thanks for the responses, that's 2 for paint and nowt for anything else, so painted it shall beSmile

So I painted them, and it isn't sticking very well. They look a lot better than they did though, so still worth it I reckon.

there is more than one type of stainless steel, some is magnetic and will to some extent rust and some others will rust, just not to the extent of normal steel
