How easy is it to balance the carbs?

You will need a long Philips screwdriver! After you have found all the adjuster screws it is fairly easy. I think there is a how to guide on Pats motorcycle page.http://www.cartestsoftware.com/fz1/carburetorsynchronization.html.
I used that as a guide the first time I did mine when I had a gen1

except that everything will be covered in crap and wiring loom and possibly the evap system.

a good torch, some tippex and plusgas and the 300mm screwdriver will see it done.
