Don't know how I haven't noticed before but only seen this a few days ago ..
Is it normal?
Thanks for any replies ..

Re: 2 small holes at bottom of end can .. - fazersharp - 10-02-15

Yep I have that - only on my 98 its 1 hole on mine and it is to let out water condensation from what I understand, and unless you have just washed it those water "strips" are where you have just been out on it and the condensation has come out of the holes and been wind blasted up the side

Re: 2 small holes at bottom of end can .. - odbguy - 10-02-15

Ahh yes that makes sense actually.  Thank you for quick reply too..
Yeah just mid way cleaning it after 1st proper blast this year Smile

Re: 2 small holes at bottom of end can .. - fazersharp - 10-02-15

I said that because I see those water strips on my bike that have come out and then dried. Its starting from cold - then hot creates the condensation but after a proper ride up to temp it evaporates and no longer comes out the hole or in your case holes (im sure my 98 only has 1 hole ) I wonder why that is. Did they change it or has your past owner drilled another one

Re: 2 small holes at bottom of end can .. - odbguy - 10-02-15

I thought myself was possibly holes for water condensation or possibly something like that .. an uneducated guess from my part mainly tho ? Lol .

But as you have said about it having 2 holes as oppose to 1 ..
The last owner hardly touched the bike, said the only thing he did was add a scottoiler. . Never said anything about the end can.
The one before that, the 1st owner bought the bike instead of taking up golf, but decided after few 1000 miles he was less a biker and more a golfer .. lol

Il have a little look online, unless anyone with 03 can comment otherwise? ? :/

Hi, just a quick questions while were discussing the end can :-)
I seem to have a problem with mine, mine seems to blow where the black pipe goes into the steel end can. obviously there is no way of taking it apart and now parts that can be replaced, so just wondering whether my exhaust has come to the end of its life... or whether this is just the way its supposed to be?
When i start the bike and put my hand around where the gap is i can feel it blowing and when i clamp it shut i can feel slight pressure against my hand.
Hopefully someone can check this, even if its just from starting your own bike up and checking as I want to fix all the niggly little things wrong with mine.
thanks

Re: 2 small holes at bottom of end can .. - fazersharp - 10-02-15

For me at least - the slight blowing is normal, I would call it more of a leak than a blow with no noticeable noise. No rattle though

Re: 2 small holes at bottom of end can .. - Silverlegacy - 10-02-15

no rattle on mine either, when i give it a bit of throttle the blow/leak increases as you can imagine.
It might very well be normal and just me trying to find faults to fix, I did buy another exhaust off ebay but it was exactly the same, but the one i bought off ebay was in worse shape than mine.
Some people said it can be fixed with sealant of some sort, but if its just the way its meant to be then i might not bother.
Although as my engine vibrates a bit i wasnt sure if this would have relevance?

Re: 2 small holes at bottom of end can .. - red98 - 10-02-15

Ive had a couple of end cans go like this, first one I replaced, when that one went the same way I filled the gap with gumgum smoothed it round with my finger and when set rock hard I painted it, looks good and you would never know its been repaired....could be a MOT fail if its blowing...

Re: 2 small holes at bottom of end can .. - Silverlegacy - 10-02-15

Is that the same as fire gum?
I looked on halfords and it's made by the same company "holts"

Re: 2 small holes at bottom of end can .. - red98 - 10-02-15

Yeh, thats the stuff...its a bit messy but easy to wipe off before it sets, bit of masking tape around the pipe and can would help but
Remove it as soon as you have finished applying the gum, if you leave it untill it sets you'll never get it off.goes rock hard when set...

Re: 2 small holes at bottom of end can .. - YamFazFan - 10-02-15

Yep & the 3rd hole is visible in odbguys pic also.Sure it's Yamaha engineered Smile.

Re: 2 small holes at bottom of end can .. - fazersharp - 11-02-15

Ahhh haha as if I didn't spot that 3rd hole ..
Well at least we have solved that mystery a Wink

Re: 2 small holes at bottom of end can .. - fazersharp - 11-02-15

Ok just looked and I have TWO holes. The one on the funnel shape part and the one on the tube part furthest away from the seam

Re: 2 small holes at bottom of end can .. - Fazerider - 11-02-15

@ Silverlegacy. Yes, your can is on the way out.
The only good news is that if money's tight you can bodge it for a fair time. I used high temp silicone sealant to bung up the gap between the inner and outer bits where the pipe enters the can. It did get through a couple of MOTs that way, but the rattle got too irritating in the end.
The problem is the inner mild steel rusts through down at the bottom (despite the drain holes).
I dismantled mine:

You can see the two inner flanges have rotted through (ignore the slot in the stainless to the left, that's just my clumsy hacksawing). Not shown is the mesh sleeve that the internals are spot-welded to, that's surrounded with mineral wool before being slid into the stainless outer. The mesh gets rusted away at the lower end too so quite a bit of the wool had blown out.

Re: 2 small holes at bottom of end can .. - fazersharp - 11-02-15

Thats an interesting photo of whats inside, did you take to bits to repair it.
Also I thought that the end can was a "slip on" and so you would expect some leakage of gas around the pipe

Re: 2 small holes at bottom of end can .. - Fazerider - 11-02-15

I just took it apart for curiosity's sake, I can't weld stainless steel so repair wasn't an option.
The left-most mild steel cap is welded to the stainless input pipe though the rest is a press fit to the stainless outer so would not have been perfectly gas-tight.
