Repainting Garage Door - nick crisp - 01-02-15 Bit of a mundane one, but is it ok to use Nitromors on your typical metal, up-and-over garage door? And what's the best way to repaint after? Obviously after cleaning thoroughly it'll need a primer coat before applying paint, but what's the best way - brush ok? I'll source the right outdoor application paint and primer (gloss white finish to replace the ugly old brown colour that comes off with just a wipe with a wet rag now). Don't have any spray guns and don't want to spend that much now, just prepping the house for sale. Cheers Foccers! Re: Repainting Garage Door - dazza - 01-02-15 I have painted many garage doors Nick. The best way I have found for finish and speed is to thin down the undercoat and gloss with white spirits and use a roller to apply, then a large brush immediately after as you are going to get rid of the orange peel effect the gloss roller leaves. Make sure you use a gloss roller and not an emulsion one and what size you use is up to you but if there ate tricky little panels onit iI would use a 4". If not I'd use a 9" roller and smooth it off with a decent 4" brush. Failing that, see if Devilsyam can carbon dip it. ![]() Re: Repainting Garage Door - nick crisp - 01-02-15 Carbon dip :lol That would be seriously cool! Cheers dazza. Is a paint stripper ok on these things? I would guess it's ok, but... Re: Repainting Garage Door - noggythenog - 01-02-15 Pics of the strippers please 8) Re: Repainting Garage Door - Exupnut - 01-02-15 Nitromoors would be perfect to strip the old paint but glove up and SERIOUSELY watch for splashes. Gentle even brush strokes without flicking the brush. U get that in ur eye you'll fekkin know about it. Goggles preferably. As Dazza said re thinners but I'd recommend a rad roller to apply with brush for the recesses. The brown colour comes off at the slightest provocation, but there is a layer of blue underneath too, some of which has also peeled, and then primer. Paint stripper to just take the whole damn lot off. Re: Repainting Garage Door - paul1606 - 01-02-15 Save time & money Leave the door up when you have viewings :thumbup Re: Repainting Garage Door - DILLIGAFF - 03-02-15 Don't forget to leave it in the "up" position till its dry to prevent tears Re: Repainting Garage Door - Robbie8666 - 03-02-15 just a question on this I know Nick mentioned he hasn't got a sprayer but could you buy a cheap garden sprayer and thin the paint down (as mentioned) & use that? Re: Repainting Garage Door - YamFazFan - 06-02-15 I'm pretty sure the composition of most paintstrippers has changed in the last few years as a result of the dichloromethane ban.Don't know how effective it is compared with the old stuff. Re: Repainting Garage Door - locksmith - 07-02-15 Yes it changed a few years ago and virtually doubled in price for a less effective product! Re: Repainting Garage Door - His Dudeness - 07-02-15 I used the green can of nitromours recently and it did very little. A heat gun and a scrapper is the way to go if you want to strip it. Heat the paint until it's soft but not burning and it'll come off in big strips. Then a quick sand and clean, followed by undercoat and two top coats and it'll look good and last. A sprayer isn't really going to save you any time because you're only doing a small area and most of the time goes into the prep not the painting. |
