Ignition key hard to turn - Robbus - 17-02-14 I suspect the barrel is on it's way out. When I bought it the guy said it wouldn't go on to the steering lock position (not a problem for me luckily) but the key was free moving from off to on. Now it's getting to be a bit of a bugger to get on. Is there likely to be anything easy that can be done to fix up the existing barrel or should I be looking for a replacement set of locks, if so are boxeye locks the same as foxeye (just to open up the available possibilities)? Cheers, Rob Re: Ignition key hard to turn - Chris - 17-02-14 Have you tried getting some WD40 in there? get a good squirt of it in there and put the key in and out a few times, might help free it up. Worth a try and a lot easier than replacing all the locks. Must of been full of crap!! Re: Ignition key hard to turn - darrsi - 17-02-14 Pull the steering to the left when putting it on lock, it does make a difference. Re: Ignition key hard to turn - His Dudeness - 17-02-14 Try pushing the key towards the front of the bike as you turn it Re: Ignition key hard to turn - Robbus - 17-02-14 Ta guys, I'll give the old WD40 a blast and good old wiggle. Def preferable to replacing the locks! Cheers, Rob Re: Ignition key hard to turn - Razgruff - 18-02-14 http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,11341.0.html Re: Ignition key hard to turn - Frosties - 18-02-14 Errrr, sorry to be a doubter fellas but i've always used Graphite Powder/Lube in my bike locks/ignition as this contains no oils (WD40) to attract and hold any dirt. Always worked for me for long periods........... Re: Ignition key hard to turn - Robbus - 18-02-14 Hmmm, common problem then, hey ho! I'll try stuffing some grease down there at the weekend and giving it a good jiggle ![]() Cheers, Rob Re: Ignition key hard to turn - Razgruff - 18-02-14 nothing will repair it other than a new lock, the best you can hope for is to keep the bits inside as lubed up as possible stop anymore wear, and ease the movements of the parts inside Re: Ignition key hard to turn - john 087 - 18-02-14 I used this cap of a deoderant cap when my ign switch was acting up. I also used some electric contact cleaner. It helps when washing the bike to keep the water and rain out as the bike is left outside at work most days in the rain. Had no problems for a good while. I'll try stuffing some grease down there at the weekend and giving it a good jiggle I have tried grease and its not the way!! It starts out ok but soon returned back to being a c*nt .. After my most recent attempt I think I have cracked it, as it has never felt better, no more jiggling the key or turning the bars.. I filled it with wd40, let it sit for a minute and blew it out with a airline, then did it twice more for luck!! So I don't think the barrel is worn on mine, I think it was just full of shit... Re: Ignition key hard to turn - noggythenog - 19-02-14 Ok everybody. ![]() No more foccing about with wd40 or grease. ![]() I remembered someone on here ages ago saying that the only thing for locks is graphite.oils end up attracting more dust and making the problem worse. My front door lock was totally focced to the stage where it was an absolute struggle to get the key fully into the lock and my missus got locked out coz she is too puny. Anyway a quick google to amazon gets me this little bundle of joy. 1 half second blast in the lock.....instantly fixed 8) .....not only is it fixed but it is without doubt the smoothest lock i have ever encountered. ![]() Leave it 40 days for your wd40 to bugger off and get some of this in there. Re: Ignition key hard to turn - Buzz - 19-02-14 +1. Used it on my bicycle brake cables for years, great on front door Yale locks too. Maplin do it for £3. They wouldn't listen to me :grumble :lol :lol Re: Ignition key hard to turn - darrsi - 19-02-14 Nice one Noggy, just ordered some for £2.80 delivered on Flebay. ![]() I did look last time the subject was brought up but seemed to only find a much more expensive version, obviously just a bigger can i s'pose which i didn't really need. Re: Ignition key hard to turn - Robbus - 20-02-14 Alright already ![]() Cheers, Rob Re: Ignition key hard to turn - Dead Eye - 20-02-14 I ordered some just for the sake of having it around... though I broke the trend and I got it from Amazon ![]() Re: Ignition key hard to turn - dcurzon - 20-02-14 ![]() |
