Oil and filter change - akula - 22-03-12
Hi guys just looking a bit of advice on my new fzs600 2002 with 6.5k miles. Just bought it but was going to change the oil and filters.
What oil and filters do you recommend? I don't mind spending a bit more for a better product if it is worth it and good for the bike.
Also have you any other suggestions on what to check/change. Everything else seems to be in great nick...chain etc

Oil is a much discussed topic - some (the misguided fools
)will say you must buy bike specific oil such as Motul 7100 or similar, while others will say that if Mr Yamaha states CF or SL spec (which he does, for an FZS600) then any that meets that spec is champion. I'll leave you to work out which camp I fall into 8) .Filter wise, I've always used generic from my local bike shop, never had any bother.

From the previous threads id suggest that it depends on how much you want to take care of the bike. Using cheap parts and oil but changing them more frequently seems to be the opinion for best results but its wether you want to do the maintenance constantly - though I guess this depends on how much you intend to use the bike.
I opted for Castrol Power 1 oil with a Halfords filter - I wasn't interested in shopping around so just walked in, grabbed the items, paid for them and did the change

I've always used Silkolene, seems like an honest oil (!) and within the range specified by the manufacturer of the bikes, 10w 40 SF in this instance. Generic oil filter and change the oil in good time with reference to the service schedule.
Apparently changing the oil frequently is more important that the badge on the container.

Great. In regards to champion oil can anyone recommend a good supplier. Also would you recommend putting in a K&N air filter?

I also got my filters from eBay. With a fuel and air filter. Easy to do and they have the workshop manual on the forum

OK, i know this is a touchy subject but i cant help giving my opinion :\ ,
where does Mr Yamaha state CF or SL for the FZS600?
the owners manaul and the service manual state that do not use CD or Higher ....... but does also say in the specs that SE,SF,SG or higher may be used.
using that info would suggest that an oil that was only SL spec would be fine,
the problem with most of the cheap SL oils that people seem to think are fine for a bike also meet the spec CF !!!!
CF spec oils do contain "slippery modifiers" such as molybdenum which are not good for wet clutches and not great for the high temps of gearboxes.

its only my opinion but 10 years ago i would have agreed that oil was oil and been done with it, but new modern cheap oils that are designed to meet as many modern petrol and diesel combustion only all have some form of additives.
you wouldnt catch a cager putting gearbox oil into the engine, nor putting engine oil into the gear box, so why would i put anything other than a motorcycle oil into my bike?
I do agree that if you can find an oil that only states SE, SF, SG regardless of whether it states for motorcycle use or not, that it would be fine.
but i do not accept that CD,CE,CF is of any use.

For the K&N filter; based on the fact that they are washable and have a million mile warranty (mine did at least) then Id suggest its probably worth it. Found mine on eBay for about £25 instead of nearly £50 from some other online retailers :eek
To be fair though, I havent checked the price of OEM / Replacement filters. At the time, £25 seemed resonable *shrugs*

k&n filters and any quality oil i use an oil [color=rgb(51, 51, 51)][/color]

Asda 10/40w changed every 2k, champion oil filter every other oil change - changing your oil regularly is better than sticking in overpriced stuff and forgetting about it.

I agree with Janner. I use the cheapest oil i can get and change it every 2000/2500 miles rather than leave it.

Hein gerike do a fairly cheap semi synthetic oil.I have used this for years with no problem. I put a new engine in my bike in january after 71,000 miles on this oil ( changed regularly) but always used the same brand. My bike is used every day rain or shine and this oil has never let me down. Hope this helps.

well my bro just did his car oil change and gave me the rest of his oil castrol edge 5-30w full synthectic will this be good on fz6?? :lol
