Re: Peculiar 'chuffing' noise. - sadlonelygit - 22-07-16 made sure your exup bolts are nice and tight ![]() Re: Peculiar 'chuffing' noise. - BBROWN1664 - 22-07-16 I had a similar thing on my FZS600. IT was down to the tread pattern on the front tyre. New tyres changed the noise. Re: Peculiar 'chuffing' noise. - fazerscotty - 23-07-16 Have you tried staying away from train lines - choo choo :rollin :rollin :rollin Re: Peculiar 'chuffing' noise. - nickodemon - 24-07-16 Have you got a hugger? I had a fazer 1000 with new tyres and i could hear a noise, but looked at tyres and couldn't see anything, but when i removed the hugger there were wear marks, so i lined the hugger wear marks with the tyre and there was a barely visible mark on the tyre. Once i changed the tyre to a flatter profile the noise went away. Worth a look Re: Peculiar 'chuffing' noise. - nick crisp - 27-07-16 The rear tyre rubbing on the hugger was my first suspicion. The fact that I'd recently switched from PR2s to PR4s, and your post above, nickodemon, got me thinking that it sounds quite possible that this is what it could be. Quite likely I first started to hear it shortly after that switch, mileage covered since would be about right. Looking around it in situ, it didn't look like anything was close to the tyre (or chain for that matter), but I did continue to think maybe it was just somewhere I couldn't see properly. This morning, I took the hugger off. Couldn't see any obvious places where anything might be coming into contact with it, so took the bike out for a test spin. Well, it's definitely loads better. But, I swear I could still hear that same noise on a couple of occasions at low revs, just when accelerating gently in traffic. Tried different revs in different gears, and it was difficult to reproduce, but I'm nearly convinced it's still there a bit, although much, much less loud. So now I'm beginning to wonder if maybe fazer-rat is right, and it could be a normal thing for these bikes, maybe some worse than others? Fact is, once I go over certain revs, I can't now hear it, with the hugger off, because the can just drowns it out, if indeed it is still there. So I'm wondering, could it be that it was there all along and the hugger actually amplified it? But hang on, when I first had the bike, I never noticed it. It's definitely something that has started in the last few thousand miles, or at least, has got to the point where I could clearly hear it in that time. I must've covered at least 15k miles on this bike before the noise first manifested itself. And it had got to the point where it was bloody loud! Well, the test ride today was only short, 7 or 8 miles, so maybe inconclusive, need to take it out for a longer spin, get everything properly warmed up. Re: Peculiar 'chuffing' noise. - Capt - 27-07-16 FWIW, I recently changed to Avon Storm 3D XM from Storm ST's, straight after there first outing back in my garage when I clean the chain & re oil it, the tyre was rubbing ever so slightly on the hugger in one spot only, with chuffing noise. Following day after spinning the wheel the noise had gone, after the tyre had lost its heat. Re: Peculiar 'chuffing' noise. - nick crisp - 27-07-16 Bugger, it ain't the hugger! Did about 200 miles, and once everything was thoroughly up to temp., here was the noise again, every bit as loud as before. :\ I'm just going to stop worrying about it as whatever it is doesn't seem to affect how the bike rides in any way. Chances are, it's that tight spot in the chain, or pad noise or something. That stuff is all going to need doing soon anyway, so I'll see what happens then. Peculiar 'chuffing' noise. - mickvp - 28-07-16 I think it's worth mentioning that when I changed from my maxxis tyres to PR4's I got the exact same noise you describe at about 30mph as well. It seemed to be coming more from the front end of the bike on mine (I have an open face helmet so it makes pinpointing a noise at speed a bit easier). In the end I put it down to the tread pattern of the front tyre, and it has (I think anyway) gone away as the tyre has worn so i reckon Bbrown has hit the nail on the head with the front tyre tread guess, I'm 99% that's what the chuffing noise was on mine anyway. Re: Peculiar 'chuffing' noise. - nickodemon - 28-07-16 Is it possible the rubber chain guide has worn through the rubber to the plastic. |
