No commitments right now, but on the verge of taking up this ^ one. This is why I am thinking about these things now. It may be that I buy a place and have enough left over to do a bit of touring anyway, which in the end, may be enough to sate my appetite. But once the house is bought, that's it, decision made, as by the time I could sell up again, there'd be less money available with which to make these decisions.

Never mind this Cumbria lark Nick. Come the whole hog into Scotland with us nutters. It took me less than a half hour to drive to this last weekend:

Plus being nearer Glasgow means you might have a better chance of a job with it being a big city.
Can't really offer any REAL advice, I'm just a young pup and my body hast started to punish my biking wounds yet.
You are right to open it up though, you might not get anything hugely helpful from this thread as only you know all the ins and outs of it, but it's usually handy to see things from abother PoV. I'm sure you will make the most of your situation whatever you decide on

Go to Scotland, rent a place for a bit (if that's an option) do it for a year to see how the Scottish weather affects the joints and then start another conversation on here about what to do next a year later.......
Oh, and don't forget to organise a LOFO day out in Jock land! ROOOOOOOAAAAAAAD TRIIIIIIIIIP!

I've chosen Cumbria because it gives me easy access to Scotland, and the Yorkshire Dales and Moors, and the Lake District. Best of all worlds from that point of view

Sounds like you don't really want a change of direction you just want to be doing more exploring and camping on your bike. Get a tent, sleeping bag etc and go for it

What do you do for a living the jobs in Cumbria are quite varied from industrial on the coasts to tourist based in the lakes

There is quite a difference 400 miles makes to the weather up here from what you've been used too.......its pissing down more, its colder and we have the foccin English as neighbours :rollin.......but that said the roads and scenery up here are second to none

There certainly is a massive difference in weather...and temperature. I have been in Stratford yesterday and today, and it might as well have been bloody Spain. Not even that nice of a day but it was well warm by our standards.
