Too late now but every 6 months swap keys around then at least you will have two that work the same, incase one does get lost

Eventually if your barrels go to the same as the one on my old XS, you will be able to turn the ignition on and remove the key with the engine running.
I have a friend who lost a key as it vibrated out when the bike was moving.

Vaseline in the barrel used to be a service item years ago, I don't know if it still is.
And It probably never got done, like door hinges on car services, one of those things that just gets skipped over
I did Vaseline regularly my TDM, which I brought from new.
and in the 4 years I had it there wasn't any noticeable wear.

You just reminded me. When I was a yoof and had an FS1E-DX you could take the key out of that when it was running. My mates used to pull up beside me, sometimes whilst moving, and nick my key and ride off!

Solid advice folks, will lob some vaseline into it and see if it improves!
Re: getting a new key cut, surely getting one copied off the worn key will just give me a sharper worn key? :lol
It might need replacing down the line but i'd rather not have to carry a second key to open the petrol tank either!

Shoved a small amount of vaseline into the ignition at the weekend. I have to say that it does seem that there is a small improvement.

It won't fix it
but will ease the movement of the worn bits inside, will take a little while for the Vaseline to work it's way around in there to lube up all the bits
