If he'd said "cheapest, easiest" it would be upgraded bulbs.

Anyhow, I'm pissed off with being blinded at night so I've ordered one of  these for 22 of your Earth currency units..

I'll let you know how I get on.

With photos if possible and if it works well a photo install guide. I know I am not after much

Re: headlight upgrade - Andy - 16-10-11

Instead of LED upgrade I've put an LED running light under the headlights and it looks great.

Re: headlight upgrade - Dead Eye - 19-10-11

Just spent most of the day trying to do the headlight upgrade and after routing cables, soldering and generally making a fool of myself I've somehow managed to get it working ish - the offside lamp now comes on for dipped beam but the nearside one won't turn in at all. Someone help, it makes no sense and I'm sure the bulb still works  :'(

Edit: Ok turns out I was possibly being crazy, its all working now (properly) thank god  Big Grin

Re: headlight upgrade - pointer2null - 23-10-11

One other fix you can do is replace the feed to the headlights with better cable. If you bike is anything like mine, then the original wire is thin and shows signs of overheating.

Take the feed (via an inline fuse) direct from the battery to a relay by the light, use the original feed to activate the relay.

Re: headlight upgrade - Major Rant - 03-11-11

Folks ... "It came ... it finally came" (to quite "Sid" in Toy Story 1) 28 days from Hong Kong.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6000K-HID-H4-3-Ballast-Motorcycle-Yamaha-PW-TW-C164-/170664547078?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D1%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D3932819787664413200

But it came with no instructions, not even in Chinese!

Question is ... It has an orange shroud over the HID assembly ... Am I supposed to remove that??

It looks suspiciously permanent.

Cheers

Re: headlight upgrade - Fazerider - 03-11-11

Hard to tell without a pic, but I'd guess is it's just a cover to stop sweaty fingerprints getting on the quartz envelope... in which case it should be removed before installation.

You're right ... I figured it out while trying to assemble the thing into its H4 flange thing.

This is it ... (The shroud on mine is orange - hence the confusion, I thought it was some colour correction thing).

One other 'problem' ... The Quartz envelope is very wobbly on its mounting - so I took the base apart to see why and its SPRING MOUNTED. So it looks like its supposed to wobble. Is that normal ?? (I mean there's a spring mount hidden INSIDE the silver cylinder, not the spring in the pic.

Or have I just got a dose of that legendary Chinese Quality...  :eek ?

Re: headlight upgrade - Boom - 04-11-11

My fazer is fitted with headlight conversion done by garage, if I can work out how to scan to computer I have full instructions with step by step guide, wiring diagram and what parts you require.

Re: headlight upgrade - Major Rant - 05-11-11

I've finally figured this Chinese thing out (arrived in the post after 28 days waiting)

Its an H4 HID - so it has 2 'HID capsules' but only 1 "Ballast".

The Capsules are mounted on a solenoid that waggles them up and down depending on whether you are on dip or main beam.

Apparently that makes it a "Bi- Xenon" ... :rollin

Cool, and all for 20 quid.

When I've finished the new "engineered Oak" floor in the hall I'll let you know how I get on.

Re: headlight upgrade - Deefer666 - 06-11-11

Quote:Has anyone had a go with LEDs?

OK as an additional light but as a main source of illumination they are highly illegal, LEDS provide a very clean source of light but the light has very little "spread" so they would be a very concentrated beam.

I want to do that but always wondered if it was legal...and does it matter on MOT's...

Re: headlight upgrade - Deefer666 - 06-11-11

Yes its legal and if it worris the MOT inspector that much and the conversion is done properly just pull the fuse on the link wire come MOT time.
