LED Indicators
« on: 09 September 2013, 11:48:16 am »
My front right indicator is playing up - sometimes it flashes normally, sometimes not. I've checked bulb etc and it doesn't seem to be loose, but have decided to use this to fit LED indicators anyway.

So I was thinking something like these for the front:

http://www.roarfactory.co.uk/yamaha-led-indicators

And this for the back:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Clear-integrated-LED-tail-light-lamp-with-signal-function-Yamaha-FZS-600-Fazer-/130917420363?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item1e7b494d4b

Questions:

1) Will rear unit pass MOT, if original indicators are removed (ie are those LED type ok on their own)?
2) Will new LED brake lights (in link) pass MOT?
3) The first link includes (according to description) "Including blinker speed regulating resistor" - will this resistor be all that's needed for both front and back, or do I need a resistor for rear LEDs too?

Are you sure it's not the wiring at fault rather than the front indicator?

I have that rear unit on the rear of my bike, but i left the original indicators on as well as they are brighter than the LED's, plus i want people to see me turning anyway, the more the merrier.
I didn't need a resistor but think you need it if the originals are removed?
Not sure about the legalities though, might be worth phoning whoever does your MOT's?

I'd say the brake light will pass MOT no problem, not sure about the indicator on its own though like darrsi said though I'd feel more comfortable having normal indicators aswell, people might not understand the indicator in a brake light thing there's a lot of idiots on the roads.  :D

The rear indicators have to be a distance  of 240mm apart to pass the MOT.

That does ring a bell, i've read that before now you've mentioned it.
Those tail lights are okay for braking, but i wouldn't want them as my only indicators, they're simply not bright enough and they're also an unusual colour.

Ok, sure I've seen them as the sole rear indicators on Ducati's, wonder if they attach their normal indicators again at MOT time.

Is checking the wiring easy?

Do you think that rear unit is worth £60 Darrsi? How does it look on the bike?

Yeah they look fine, i've got a top box that hangs over mine on so i don't really pay too much attention to it to be honest.
If i remember correctly i paid £75-£80 a few years ago so the price is fair enough.

Was behind a bike this morning, in the dark, with that tail unit fitted. To be honest fella, yes I noticed when he was braking but when he indicated it took me a while to distinguish what the fook was going on - this was even worse when braking & indicating.

I'd stick with the standard indicators if it was me. As said above, it's not clear to the dickheads behind you what your planning on doing - the indicator just does not stand out enough!

Your call.

I agree with Frosties,
saw one of these the other day on a scooter, first thought, funky disco lights - oh foc don't hit it - shit those were indicators. First thought should have been, he's going that way

Do you still use the LED indicators too, or did you leave this unwired?

Use both, you shouldn't need a resistor and they should flash in sync okay.
I've got LED strips on the front of mine on the fairing near the indicators as well, plus an indicator beeper sound for good measure as i was fed up with people not looking back before crossing as i turn into my road.
It's like a noisy Xmas tree when i'm about to turn left or right, but as i said earlier it's good to be seen!

I have the Yamaha LED indicators.. Very good. much brighter than standard and you know they are road legal unlike the Chinese ones.
If ordering though get them from here http://www.flitwickmotorcyclesexpress.com/genuine-yamaha-led-flashers/

Free postage and they are a Yamaha dealer. The kit comes with resistors to put the load up to what it should be but i got a LED flasher relay from eBay. works well and is a bit neater than the resistors under the fairing.

Also just noticed they posted my review lol  :rollin
