R1 engine in a Thou
« on: 06 September 2013, 04:30:57 pm »
I was at Tesco earlier, and a noticed a familiar looking bike outside. A blue Fazer Thou (with some unusual mods). Looking at it, I thought the engine looked a bit different, so when the rider appeared (and after I told him about FOC-U), he told me he'd fitted an R1 engine into the Thou (not the detuned jobbie you chaps have - from a bona fide R1)!

Anyone else done this? Apart from some corrosion on the block, it looked pretty neat!

Hmm, difficult to tell without going and looking at mine (what, get out of my chair?! :eek ), but carbs are definitely different - no TPS.

Oops, no just spotted it! Couldn't see it cos everythings in such a state!

From where I was, the clutch housing looked marginally closer to the airbox cover than stock FZS too. Unless I'm seeing things.

The rider (sporting a club jacket emblazoned with President) assured me he'd pulled the engine from the R1 and installed it himself...

My R1 has the clutch actuation lever at the bottom of the case, not the top as in the picture.

2001 R1 engine:

I think one of the biggest problems you'd have to do it, the R1 uses much more downdraught inlet tracts, so the carb position is very different. Don't know how you'd get around that.

He was a bit weird if he was trying to wind you up. He didn't think you had a 600 and was making the point that the 1000 has an R1 based engine by any chance? Cos that is not an R1 engine!

That's why I started the thread. I told him I rode the 6. When he started talking about the R1 engine, I told him I knew about it being a detuned R1 lump. Whereupon, he told me that he'd swapped an R1 (actual) engine into his bike.

Seemed a bit odd, so thought I'd chuck it out here.
