Broken fuel tap
«

Got the bank of carbs off last night ready to clean. When I took the fuel pipe off the bottom of the tank, the barbed fitting that the pipe fits onto came out of the fuel tap. It looks like it is a press fit. I applied a small amount of heat with a paint stripper gun to try and soften the fuel pipe a bit but I think this caused the problem in that the 2 metals expanded differently. Am I ok just pushing it back in or should i replace the whole tap?

Your a brave man using a heat gun arounf the fuel tank.
Replace it, there are plenty of them around.
It is in a position where you want to fit it and forget about it, not to be lifting the tank all the time checking it

When I say heat gun, i mean glorified hair drier used for stripping paint. Used on lower setting from a distance so there is no naked flame or anything. But ok maybe that's one of my lives used up

have i understood this right.....when pulling the fuel pipe off the tap the brass tube has pulled out of the tap housing and is stuck in the pipe.....if this is right soak the tube in boiling water for a minute or so,it will then come out easy

Hi red, yes exactly right. Once i get this out of the pipe with hot water, is it ok just to push it back into the tap?

I wouldn't recommend it - if it leaks fuel and it gets near something hot or sparky then you could be in a world of pain...
The taps are inexpensive, best to just replace it - its an easy enough job for peace of mind
