Side-on battery fitment is quite common with modern battery types nowadays. Just need to make sure you're using the right battery for it.

That motobatt you have in the picture says on it not be used inverted. If you say when fitted normally, you can't get the seat on, then it must be wrong battery for your bike. I don't own a gen 2 so can't say which is the correct fitment battery. The one on my gen 1 is a MBT12B4 and also says not to be used inverted, which to means to me terminals up.
You must have the wrong battery?
Hi,correct Motobatt fitment for a Gen 1 Fazer is MBT14B4......You have been sold a smaller one than is recomended.... I have the 14 fitted to mine.

Hi Jacko, Yup,no doubt it does but it is not as big as recomended. I think its physically the same size but will not store as much juice. 12ah instead of 14ah.
Just trying to steer other forum members to the correct one.

Can't understand the problem. According to Yuasa's own guide you should fit a YTZ14S. The first letter may change according to manufacturer, but for a bike shop not to be able to look this up.... :rolleyes

YTZ14S Dimensions: 150mm x 87mm x 110mm

There are LOADS of batteries fitted this way. Most of the R1's for example.

Most without any problem at all.

Look elsewhere for the solution....
