Engine Rattle
«

Have just bought 2002 version with 30k on the clock, every thing works well very pleased apart from rattle. Have read on the forum that this seems to be a Fazer issue ? I am going to sync the carbs and remove and check cam chain tensioner as a starting point. Is there an idiots guide to removing cam chain tensioner and what should i look out for. Thanks in advance

Does the noise go when you pull the clutch in?

If the noise goes when you pull in the clutch its nothing to worry about though a carb balance can quieting it up..
Just a rattily clutch basket, a lot of yams do it..
Cam chain rattle sounds completely different and follows the engine speed..

Cam chain rattle sounds like a sewing machine noise!
YouTube it, there's plenty to listen to.
30,000 is quite a common mileage for them to start rattling.

Does the rattle go after its nicely warmed up- points to camchain, but doesn't necessarily mean it needs replacing, probably just waiting for the ratchet to click onto next step!

To remove the tensioner you will have to take off the carbs. Does the bike have service history? I would replace the cam chain myself. Do a proper job.

Someone mentioned on the old forum a fix where you take out the spark plugs, put in first gear and roll it backwards
Apparently this can reset the can chain tensioner and stop the noise
For free not bad for a try and easy to do

Similar to taking the bike out and riding like the devil to force an extra click!

You could always put a manual CCT in there

There's no need on these bikes, the standard tensioner is more than capable, unlike the SRAD 750 which jumps backwards when rolling off the throttle!
