How do people clean helmet interior liners?
« on: 22 July 2013, 11:38:10 pm »
I've got a Shoei full face helmet but only the cheek pads are removable, not the bit that goes over top of my head. To complicate things I've got Autocom headset installed which is really fiddly to remove & put back. So basically  am looking for just a convenient method to clean the inside until I go the whole hog which is to use a shower head and some fabric cleaner. I'm sure I'll be corrected if this is a bad idea :D .
Advice & other peoples experiences all appreciated.
Cheers

Not tried it yet but just bought Muc-off Foam Fresh + made for the job.

Take into consideration that this goes on your head and that the chemicals you use may affect you when riding.

I take it out.

I clean it.

I put it back in.  :lol :lol

Warm water and fairy liquid do the trick for me.

Following my recent destinkification thread I've recently learnt that bicarbonate of soda can neutralise odours.

I tried it on my gloves last night and they're a lot better.

Just poured powder right in there lol.

Bit basic but seems to have helped.

Loads of baby wipes. And some frebreeze. Works a treat. My openface commuting helmet does not have  removeable lining, but it is clean enough using this method. Nothing to abrasive, as it is touching your head.

Looney tune

I always use a silk balaclava , about £10 from Heine Gericke. Hot or cold the're still comfortable and keep the inside of the helmet in great condition. My Shark helmet which is about 18 months old looks brand new inside. Get the silk ones though as they are cooler and fit well.  Worth a try?

Similar idea but I use a small running cap (like a skull cap). Easier to clean than the helmet liner.

I only buy helmets with full removable liners now, take it out, bung it in the washing machine with my tshirts!
