Hi guys.

Does any one have any idea about the fault codes that the tacho shows up? I missed a gear change and hit the rev limiter. It wasnt a massive over speed by any means just touched 12,500 but the tacho dropped straight to 0, then 4, then 7 and carried on this sequence. It went away after restarting the engine.

Hitting the rev limiter doesn't cause any problems except a drop in speed

. The yamaha service manual in the download section will tell you what the code means

The speed sensor is the unit that the leads go down to in the left side inner wheel hub.

0 and 4000rpm does suggest this, but i'm definitely not familiar with the 7000rpm reading?

My rev counter was giving 0rpm readings recently, then bouncing back to the actual rpm that the bike was doing, but Yamaha told me there was no such fault code.
I changed the TPS for a 2nd hand one and it sorted it all out.

Your 7000rpm reading is a bit of a spanner in the works

I think 7000 rpm is just his current engine speed. Bit over 80 in top gear, right?

I couldn't tell you how fast I was going I'm afraid. The little tabs on the speed sensor have broken off so the Speedo stopped working, I do have one on order but I needed to use the bike today. I have a Speedo app on the phone that I was using but the phone overheated in my tankbag due to the hot weather we've been having. Comedy of errors I know. I guess the 7000 reading could be current speed as I'm pretty sure when slowing down for a round about the numbers changed. So have we deduced that 0,4, is an over speed indication or just that its clocked the Speedo wasn't working? It's been fine for the rest of the time and as I said reset after restarting the engine

As I said the tacho has been working fine without the speedo, and is again working fine. Just wondered if anyone knew what the fault code meant so I can look at it

If the tabs on your sensor have broken off then your tacho is highly unlikely to be working fine, hence the error code?
That's like saying you've lost both your arms but it's made no difference to your swimming.

I'll say it again, 0rpm then 4000rpm is a speedo sensor error code, and in the same breath you're telling us that your speedo sensor has broken lugs.

I'm not quite sure what more you'd like me to suggest, because you've told us the problem and the cause?

Also, the tacho did not drop, your rev counter needle did.
If your tacho dropped then you were riding backwards.

I agree it's strange it only happens when you hit the rev limiter.
Can't think of any reason for that

Try a TPS check and see what it does.
Turn key on (don't start engine), unplug the TPS, then plug it back in and see where the rev needle goes, it should tell you what you need to know?

If you plugged it back in and it read 3000rpm then that is saying a faulty TPS (or faulty wiring to TPS but unlikely).

If it was positioned wrong it would read 0rpm or 10,000rpm and would need adjusting.

If all was correct it would read 5000rpm.

Faulty speed sensor would read 4000rpm.

If you plugged it back in and it read 3000rpm then that is saying a faulty TPS (or faulty wiring to TPS but unlikely).

Did it wrong then I didn't plug it back in while it was still on. Amature!

Goes to 10 after being plugged back in. Is there an easy way to adjust or is it pretty straight forward anyway?

T25 tamper proof torx driver (with the hole in the middle).
Get bike up to running temperature.
Turn engine off then switch key back on.
Unplug TPS then plug back in so it goes to the 10k mark.
Undo 2 screws on TPS just enough to be able to pivot the unit.
Move it until you get it bang on 5000rpm, then tighten screws.

DO NOT TURN KEY TO OFF POSITION WHEN AT 10,000rpm.

You will regret it, 'cos the needle will drop clockwise, then you'll have to open up the clocks to manually push the needle back round.
It's not a major, just bloody annoying (twice in my case

)

My bike stays tucked away at weekends.
Friday night is play time for me.
I've had such a busy time at work recently, and then my local pub decided to extend the opening hours until 2am and it all kind of got the better of me. I could only do the decent thing and support this decision financially.

I was a bit groggy yesterday to say the least, so apologies if i sounded a bit off.
