I believe there are size restrictions as well as weight on all flights.
I'm thinking this from when I used to be able to afford to go snowboarding - the big snowboard bag would be charged extra plus go to the 'oversize luggage' area!
Some say...

Size isn't the problem with Ryanair. Just worry about the weight for hold luggage.

For cabin bags it's the other way round.

Easyjets new rules are simple.

standard size bags are OK but if the overhead lockers get filled up and more bags need to go in, the smaller bags are guaranteed to stay in the cabin but the standard size ones may be moved to the hold.

In reality, the smaller bags actually fit under the seat in front so that's how they do it.

There used to be a bag checker frame you could use in the bag shops... When I went to Crete last year I sucessfully took a weeks worth of clothes in one!

http://www.ryanair.com/en/terms-and-conditions#regulations-checkedbaggage

For health and safety reasons Ryanair does not accept for carriage any individual item exceeding 32 kilos or with combined dimensions of more than 81cms (height), 119cms (width) and 119cms (depth). This weight limit does not apply to mobility equipment.

Yep 15 kilo is the hold not 15.1 or they'll charge you excess , dont think size matters apart from the bigger the bag the more it weighs so the less you can carry. Be VERY careful with hand luggage i've been caught twice now with the wrong size bag but only on the return trip cost me 49 euro because the wheels made it oversize. fecking hate ryan air ..... aresoles...

When we used R/A May 2013 we got away with 15.7 kilos. She said as long as it did not tip the 16kls. Then its £20 per kilo. (now that is expensive) But someone has got to pay for the Cheap airline.....
Cabin bags must fit their stand, or by the Max 40Ltr mini trolley bags. But get the lightest one as your only allowed 10kilos max. pp.

Just booked a couple of flights with Monarch.

Remember to print your boarding cards off, they charge something like £80 if they have to do it for you again at the airport.

Fluids & clear plastic bags: is that only when leaving the UK or is it EU- / World-wide? Do they hand out the plastic bags somewhere or do you need to improvise?

I flew Ryanair and found a Cabin Max bag fits snugly inside their cages. I then purchased extra clothes etc when abroad. Both bag and clothes together cost considerably less than the £100 return trip for a larger case.

Another option is to post a packet to yourself at your hotel - not tried this and don't know how a modern hotel would handle a guest's incoming mail. But again return post for a sizable package is much less than £100, and you won't have to carry it to and from airports yourself.

Most airports have a stash of the bags before security. Gatwick definitely does as does majorca
