Looking for a SUMMER JOB

Hello all,

I'm after a summer job (to pay the Fazer Insurance among other things), so I thought I'd post up here to see if anyone has any good suggestions.

I'm a 19yr old undergrad, just finished 2nd year of Aero Engineering, speak English and French fluently and good communications skills in Spanish. I have experience of working in small firms, and have experience as a waiter and as a assistant chef in a restaurant. Although, I'm not too fussed about the nature of the job.

Not too worried about where the job is either - have tent and Fazer, will travel!

If you want a job where you don't earn any money then be a courier, as a bonus you get to kill your bike, although thinking about it the cost of courier insurance for a 19 year old would be, let's say, interesting!

I talked to Exupnut about that, as couriering could be a job to enjoy over the summer. But he said the same as you about insurance.... I'm on 33hp as well....

I used to spend my summers in Newquay in Cornwall.  Work in the kitchen or as a waiter for a hotel with staff accommodation.  Great fun!

With your language skills you could try the same in France, maybe Biarritz for surf?  Near Spain so the Spanish would help.

The problem in France is that the job market is even worse there than it is here!! I know, I normally live there. And had a hell of a time finding jobs last summer, and the ones I found were lousy to boot.

In a previous life I was a manager at an outdoor adventure/activity centre. Climbing, sailing guns, quads tennis and English foreign language lesions. Its a very seasonal job but great fun and is a young persons game. You need to get in now as the season will/ may have started.

Just some suggestions...
Outdoor activities are a good bet for summer jobs. Places like the Lake District, Snowdonia etc normally have a lot to offer at this time of year, and beautiful places to live at the same time. As well as good biking roads, you've got some great walking opportunities if you're into that. Outdoor gear shops, campsites, climbing and adventure centres, not to mention hotels and B&Bs.

I use to really focc around with em and ask em what was the difference between a 2 and single humped Camel and never let on if I could understand their language. they were all paranoid by the time I had finished, so some one with linguist skills is in a real good position to have fun

good luck cristo. my 18 year old son has been looking for a job he can fit a levels into for 2 years. hes had bo luck  and just to seriously hurt my pocket hes going to do another 2 a levels next year before he joins his sister at uni.happy days

Good for him, not so good for your bank account!! What's he studying / want to study?

It's because I'm hurting my parents' pocket I need a job! There's also a real concern about being able to afford the Fazer to boot (all expenses for it come out of my own pocket)...

Good luck with the job hunt christo, maybe you should go and talk to some engineering shops and see if one of them will take you on for a few weeks (arrange to come back for all the holidays through your uni terms?)

Worst anyone can say is no, and shy kids don't get any sweets mind.

I'm doing my degree part time, alongside a full time job, and its not easy, but needs must when the bills need paid

You have skills, I'm sure you'll find something. What about contacting your tourist board and seeing if they need tour guides around your local town? Good luck

Hi christo. In answer to the above the bugger has nearly finished A levels in english, business, and media. He has an as level in law. His real problem is he doesnt know what he wants to do when he finishes uni. hes staying on at college for another year to do an a level in history and one of the sciences. I have to say hes a good lad and never asks for much.

Head to Lincolnshire and pick veg, that area is the biggest producers in the country. And you will learn Polish while your at it to add to you skills

Birdseye in Hull are a big employer of students over the summer for pea season

There is loads of summer work available in tourist places.  Just don't expect to see it on the internet.  Get on your bike and doorstep places.  Theme parks, hotels, restaurants, zoos, takeaways.

If you want something relevant to your degree then get in touch with your university careers service for contacts in firms.  I suspect the big boys all have their summer internships sorted by now anyway, but see if you can get something in the field as it will help your job applications.  BTW - do you realise that by Christmas this year most grad intake jobs for next June will be filled? 

If you can't find a summer job then get your finger out your arse and prepare your job applications for the real world.  Aero engineering is a bit light these days.  Rolls Royce, BaE.  Actually can't you get a job at a local airport?

I'm not saying it is right - but that is the way it was 13 years ago when I graduated, with increased competition for jobs now

With your language skills, it should be a doddle to find something that pays well in London.   You didn't say where you are living,  or are based,   or how far you can commute?

I'll be in Andover, have Fazer, can commute! I plan to look for work in earnest next week once my retakes are done.
