Don't judge me but i'm getting a Suzuki!
« on: 13 May 2013, 08:27:27 am »
Well, so far i've owned 2 Fazers and a Fazer so I think it's time to branch out  :lol .

I've gone and put a deposit down on a SV650 to replace my ageing FZS600 commuter. I think i've made a good choice and everything I read about the SV tells me that it's going to be ideal for my commute to work. Lightweight, pokey twin, great handling and should be a laugh in a twisty section that I choose to ride.

I still have my FZ1 beast as my 'proper' bike though so you can't get rid of me that easily  ;)

Quick question though, i've checked on askMID and the SV i'm picking up isn't insured as the owner is riding a sports bike instead now. Does this mean that I cannot ride it even though my insurance allows me to ride other bikes?

Cheers
Brace :thumbup

It does indeed mean you can't ride it, even if you have insurance to ride other bikes as the bike in question needs it's own insurance, least that's what I've always been lead to believe.

:agree  I was in the same boat a couple of years ago, trailered the bike in the end.

I thought as much - thanks both.

I'll probably just add the bike to my insurance properly as i'll definately be taking it unless I spot some sort of horror on the test ride.

Cheers

If the seller is bang on and your insurance company are on the ball you should be able to do it on their puter if you do a deal. Cover can be timed to start straight away. I am with ebike just now and you just print of the certificate there and then  :thumbup

Good luck with the SV, Beth used one while learning and prefers it to her FZS600  :(

Cheers, i'm with Hastings so I might call them today actually and see what they can do on the day. Good to hear that she enjoyed the SV, I love throwing my FZS about and the SV is 20kgs lighter so I think it's going to be even more fun.

Think it'll feel small at first though but i'm 5"11+ so should just about be comfortable on it.

A friend of mine did something similar with his insurance. He went to look at a car (Mitsubishi FTO for anyone interested) and ended up buying it then and there. So he called the insurance company (Admiral) from his mobile and got it insured then drove it back :P

Coolio!

I've rang my insurer and quoted the bike so all I need to do now is ring them and activate the quote and they confirmed that it'll be immediate.....sorted  :D

Its also 20hp down in comparison, so should be lighter to compensate.

HA....you'd think!!!

They rated it slightly higher risk than my FZS600 even though it's a lower group, more claims for the SV apparently - robbing bastids!! It was a popular bike and sold in the 1000's, keen with newbs too so maybe more accidents?

On that basis of course, perhaps I should get a rare Italian Bimota or something as they can't have had many claims on that....it'll be cheap as chips right?  :rolleyes

I tried the sv650 thing for commuting a few years ago and didn't get on with it. Ended up swapping it for a fazer :o It had inferior brakes, and ran out of steam a but too quick for my liking. It also vibrated so much that my top box sheared it's quick release mountings and bounced down the road! ::)

I loved the look of it though, and it sounded ace with a straight through can. (neighbours reminded me how well it sounded at 6 in the morning 8) )

Interesting Stevie, i'm sure i'll miss screaming the bollocks off my FZS, she does love that. I kind of expecting it to be ultimately less thrilling but i'm also looking forward to the usefulness of twin torque - will be interesting to see how I feel once i've got it.

I wouldn't have it as my only bike though and the FZS is getting on a little bit now - see my other 'FZS600 valuation' thread for a description lol!

Twin torque really doesn't apply on the SV, it's actually quite a revvy motor for a twin!
My best mate had one as his first bike and we did a LOT of comparisons to my Honda Hornet 600 (a fairly revvy IL4 bike, certainly at least more-so than an FZS 600!), and what we basically concluded was that the hornet was just as grunty as the the SV (as it would keep up wth it any low revs, with or without a passenger at pretty much any speed), just when my powerband kicked in I'd pull away. That said, it did handle absolutely fantastically, particularly once he'd spent some money improving the suspension and putting a half decent set of brakes on it!

Yeah, handling on mine was better than the fazer, brakes were a bit dull.  Torque on the fazer is the same, but produced about 2k higher imho. The sv seemed more nimble through traffic than the fazer, but then again, it is a bit lighter.

Beth is going for the SFV Gladius and not the SV, much of a muchness but a wee tad more break and lower seat. Seems to be more female friendly.

Its actually down to the wording on your certificate. Some say something like "as long as the vehicle is insured in its own right" and others say nothing. If it says nothing, no other insurance is required.

ha ha  I'm on a 650 Bandit so I'm not judging 8)
still miss my 99 fazer mk 1 if only they'd made them with stainless pipes :'(
bandits had a poor thing with the collector box rusting away......mild steel box surrounded by stainless pipes FFS. Suzuki eventually listened and now its all stainless. The bandit is bullet proof but I'm finding myself looking at fazers as they pass me and thinking......mmmm
lad used to work with me who had a sv600 or 650 cant remember but he rode it from Widnes to Oxford regularly to visit his girl and said it was a great bike. I've heard a lot of peeps say this about the sv so you'll be ok mate. I just couldn't take to a bike with a single cylinder, think it looks awful..................awaits pics of great single cylinder bikes to arrive :lol

Im a huge fan of twins and singles, had loads of em, but im afraid to say that I was not impressed with my mates sv650. We used to go for ride outs when I owned my 1st fazer and would regularly swap bikes for a few miles and sorry but I didnt like it. To buzzy for a proper twin (not as buzzy as my rgv250 lol), too small after jumping straight off the fazer, no real grunt or go to it... and I wasnt overly sold on the looks either. My mate only kept it 6 months then got a cbr600rr.... now THAT was more fun!
