Do we reckon this is legal?
« on: 28 April 2013, 07:23:48 pm »
Sorry for the general location admins, just looking for a quick answer atm so I can stick it on and worry about other stuff for later

See the pic

It has BS stamp but no e mark. Pretty sure it don't need both eh?

It has perforations at bottom, assuming therefore that its baffled. It roars but doesn't say anywhere not for road use.

Thoughts?

Sure it'll be fine as long as it's not crazy loud. Needs a good clean though  :D

Chris

It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.

Could be wrong but as I understand it,an exhaust doesnt need to have any markings on it. Noise level is down to MOT testers discretion as long as its not stamped `NOT FOR ROAD USE` or `RACE USE ONLY`!!

That's pretty much how I get it too. :)

Opinions are like A**holes, Everyone has one.  Some people seem to have more than one though which is a bit odd.

np.  A pleasure.  Doing research is fun...I don't quite know why but my fingers start itching if I don't know the answer to something.

Indeed. I've spent plenty of time on legislation.gov as part of my work but didn't think to look there for this

The regulations are written in a style intended for manufacturers and retailers rather than the end user. If a silencer meets the required level of noise reduction then it is stamped BS AU 193, otherwise it gets "not for road use" or "pre 1885 M/Cs only" according to the level and intended market. However, the stamp applies to the unit as sold… if it has removable baffles and the end user takes those out, the silencer may (i.e will almost certainly) be too loud to pass the relevant noise limit.
Since it looks like you could drop a ping-pong ball through that Carbon Can Company silencer it'd be very surprising if it's within the limit. The fact that police don't carry dB meters means you're unlikely to have a problem unless you make a nuisance of yourself, but you might need a lenient MOT tester.

Looks like one of the removable baffle cans, with the baffle removed. Why not just refit the baffle? Then it would be legal.

Quoting oneself is bad dju dju

Tried to catch said perforations in shot but phone only focuses one thing at a time.

Straight throughs can pass and be legal, no?

Legal and passing an mot are not allways the same thing.
My twin port blue flame is stamped but with baffels removed its to loud to be legal, yet still passes mot with ease.

Yes, but it depends on how the internals are arranged. A gun silencer does an impressive job of keeping the dBs down and is obviously a straight through design.
That can of yours has a mounting hole for a baffle on the one port fully visible in your pic, I'm willing to bet there's a corresponding one on the other port. If it could pass the noise restrictions without the baffles in... what would be the point of them?
