Rear brake problem
« on: 24 April 2013, 07:53:02 pm »
My rear brake pedal has quite a bit of movement in it before it engages, is there a way to adjust the pedal?

Yes, adjust the nuts on the back on the bolt that goes into the cylinder, bringing the nuts down to the end should help

May need bleeding and fluid changing as well if you have no history of when it was last done, you should only need to tap the lever for it to bite when it's working correctly.
Also get some WD40 or brake cleaner and spray the joint of the foot lever to clean it up as it gets a build up of crap in there, and makes it feel spongy, then give it a bit of an oiling.
You should do that once a month anyway, it's very effective.

Sounds like the pistons need cleaning too before they seize up and the caliper ends up beyond repair! Fallen foul of this one myself.

If you've never done it before, it's quite easy to do.

This is what was causing my excessive rear brake travel. :'(
Had to replace my EBC rear disc this evening, see picture, it is supposed to be flat but it is more like a dish.  :eek
Used  a Brembo disc this time. :)
I have a Fazer 1000 rear caliper which I fitted at 24000miles and I replaced the original disc at 61000 miles and now have just under 750000 miles Not to impressed with EBC, this has happened after less than 14000 miles. :'(
Four times the rear brake faded after fitting this disc, I never had that failure with the original disc and have always used EBC HH pads front and rear. It happened twice decending the Pyrenees, once  on a spirited run home from the NW200 and last Friday on the way home from work I noticed the pedal travel was getting worse and it was starting to drag badly.
At first I though it may have been because I needed to change the brake fluid and I changed it outside the hotel where I was staying in France and it happened again two days later on the Pyrennes.
I did track days with the original disc shortly after fitting the fazer 1000 caliper without ever having any issues. I have not done any track days since fitting the EBC disc.
I think an email to EBC is in order  :rolleyes

Although i gave it more work to do than normal, with sintered pads too, my EBC Prolite had to go after 11 months, it looked like it had taken a spin on a lathe.
I reckon i'd have got longer if i'd fitted a fried popadom instead  :b

I have exactly the opposite problem on my rear brake. I only have to touch the the pedal and it locks my rear up, new EBC pads on 100 miles ago, and bled with new DOT 5 fluid. Im stripping it down as im stumped on this one.

I hope it was Dot 5.1 not Dot 5.
If it was Dot 5.1 then stripping and cleaning the pistons, seals and caliper internal will most likely solve your problem as it sounds like the pistons are sticking slightly.
If it was Dot5 then you are down to replacing all seals, master cylinder and caliper and washing out everthing to get rid of the Dot 5  fluid..
