Ok. So I had an account in New York and asked them to close it down and send me a cheque for the balance.
So far so good.

Went to my local Halifax, where I have had an account for 10 yrs., and asked them what was involved in paying in my $ cheque (over 10k)

At first they told me it would be £7.50 and take about two weeks to clear. OK says I, and paid it in.

Then they said it would cost anywhere between £15 and £80, but they were unable to tell me exactly ???????????  WTF ???

Anyway, as my options were limited, I paid it in.

Now, over a week later, I received a call from them this morning to say that my cheque had been returned from head office, uncleared, because........................................ there was not enough activity on my account ????????????

So let me get this correct.  I want to pay them to clear funds into my account......... a normal banking function........... but I apparently
don't qualify for their services because they will not allow me to execute a banking function????

Its no wonder we fucking hate them.

Sure it was Halifax head office that returned? Not new York?

If it was Halifax, when did you last transact on the account?

There are some pretty strict money laundering checks that are carried out on larger international transactions, even for legit customers using normal high-street banks.

Did they at any point clarify if it was blocked under anti-fraud checks, or simply by their own rules and regulations on account usage?

I used to be with the Halifax, I believe they ripped me off twice. In my opinion your mistake is using the Halifax.

send me a cheque for the balance.

Probably had to go and print some more of those antiques off.

What was wrong with sending an electronic payment over SWIFT?

My thoughts as well, probably would've cost £20 but at least you don't have to go anywhere

Just a moan about the Halifax, a few years ago in summer during one of those downpours, I dashed into my local branch to use the cash machine only to find it was not working, so went to the counter to be told there was a £3 charge for getting cash over the counter, do you expect me to go out in the pouring rain because your machine isn't working, yes was the reply, I wondered if I could rip his head off and shove it up his arse before the screen shot up and took my arms off, thought better of it and left to draw my cash out in the rain.

that's not good customer service. (missed out some of the description so as not to be called homophobic)

In answer to your questions, some history.

Last August I was appalled to discover that CITIBANK, or the US Govt., had seized my account under their stringent money laundering laws.

When I explained that I am still the owner, living at the same address and still receiving regular statements, they were unapologetic.
It then took about two months of form filling and passport faxing to prove my identity.
Then I noticed they were deducting tax from the account, which as a non-resident alien should not be deducted. i gave up on that one as I ended up holding on phones forever, being passed from one dept. to another etc. etc.

In March this year I called to arrange closure of the account and imagine my delight when I was told that the account had been closed in January !!!!!! same shit, new year.

After some liberal exchanges of good old fashioned English grammar it was agreed that they would send me a cheque.
To arrange a bankers draft I would have needed to repeat the whole ID proving fax and post tennis tournament and I told them it would be pointless as, by the time I had proven my legitimacy once more, they would have seized the account again and in any event it had no effect previously.

Now paid into NATWEST, but they were cautious as they pointed out to me that HALIFAX had instructed me to endorse the cheque on the reverse where it says in almost invisible type.......................... "DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING HERE"      !!!!!!!!!!!!

No wonder there are problems with the economy if you can't even PAY IN TO YOUR BANK FFS.

I gotta say I've been with Halifax for a few years now & not had any problems with either of the 2 branches I have used,

in the past I have been with Lloyds (prior to TSB) & Yorkshire Banks, both have treated me & my accounts appallingly hence moving. I'm sure that all banks have good & bad points & the same with Branches & staff.

Collective noun for a group of bankers is a wunch.
