As i said earlier mine fused itself on, but this was definitely to do with the problem so count me in, that's two.

I would imagine any problems relating to the original 9mm front sprocket nut, whether that's stripping the threads, welding itself on (like mine), totally disappearing, etc.

Checked mine the other day still on there. But have ordered the bigger nut and a new gasket.

Is the point of this to quantify the number of defects and then send the results to Yamaha UK so that in future any claims get viewed faourably?

If you check the fix I put in the downloads section http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?action=downloads it has been downloaded 155 times, that would equate to at least 140 who probably had the problem if you exclude those who may have downloaded it out of curiosity.
The fix is still holding after 3250 miles. I would like to know if any of those who downloaded what I did have tried it.
I started a new topic http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,4546.msg45712.html#msg45712 on the issues last September after finding my shaft was down to 2 threads and the issues I had with Yamaha to try resolving it. I finally got a little satisfaction in way of getting all the parts I required to repair it at half retail price in a take it or leave option after trying to get the half price on the trade price.
For anyone who might consider stripping the engine to replace the shaft this is the list of parts you will require. I am lucky enough in that I can undertake the repair myself which rules out the labour costs.

1           90890-85508-00          TUBE YAMAHA BOND 1215
For those who are wondering why it requires a full engine strip is that Yamaha in their wisdom put 2 crankcase bolts under the cylinder and the only way to get at them is to remove the cylinder

Even though I have the parts now, I will not do anything unless my fix fails. Interestingly I measured the threads on the new shaft and they measured 17.80mm. I found the measurements I took when my sprocket fell off originally and it was 17.35mm and my shaft at the moment is 17.2mm.

Obviously I am another who has the issue and I thought that this was done before when someone posted the issue on the old site with the same intentions in trying to get numbers to contact yamaha and it seemed to fizzle out. As far as I can make out I am one of the very few who got anything out of Yamaha in relation to the issue. It really renders a bike scrap as putting a seconhand engine is not a good fix since that engine may have the same problem. Hopefully my fix lasts and solves the problem for me once and for all.
Rant over for today  :grumble :grumble

would the importers listen? they know the problem exists but claim ignorance when pushed on the subject!

My sprocket nut went the other day, heard a bit of a knock so I took the sprocket cover off and no nut or washer, got a new one on order from Hayballs Yamaha in Salisbury for 8 quid, they said it will be the updated one but it probably won't be! :P

It appears to be accross the 600 range only with the all 600 Fazers,  R6 and Thundercats being the worst offenders.
There is no hard and fast rule of years or models of the above.
I have never heard of any of the 1000s giving this trouble

Nope, its merely a matter of doing the job right. I have been working on Fazers for years..... Ask any of the old guard on here as I have worked on most of their bikes at one time or another and have rebuilt more FZSs than I can remember.
