After virtually 2 years of little exercise, I dusted down and overhauled the push bike yesterday and  did 40 arduous , hilly miles on it today. Gone are the days when I wouldn't think twice of 60 - 80 mile club rides at pace. The road bike is set up on the turbo in the bedroom gathering dust. I WILL start to do 3 sessions a week on it instead of idling my evenings surfing the net. Promise. Honest.

Trying to using my cross trainer which was turning into an expensive clothes rack. Hoping to get back to 3 sessions a week on it, mixing a longer endurance session with some high intensity interval stuff (basically to see if spending as little amount of time on it as possible has any effect!).

Failing that the winter vomiting bug gets rid of few pounds! I think December just gone is the only time I have lost weight over Christmas.

Still feeling the excess of Christmas, I wonder what we all do to stay slim!!!

Just over a year ago, having got back from my annual biking and surfing holiday, I weighed myself and found I was 12 stone which is *way* over where I should be.

After a lot of searching around on the web (most searches tend to end up with someone trying to sell you a diet or dodgy "weight loss" tablets) I came up with three simple bits of information:

1) Find your Basal Metabolic Rate here: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ and then multiply that number by your activity level to find how many calories your body actually needs per day.

2) Keep a food diary, ie every time you eat or drink something you write down the calorie content.

3) Remember that a pound (just under half a kilogramme) of fat is 3,500 calories, so if you eat 250 calories a day fewer than your body needs, in a fortnight you'll lose a pound and if you also do 250 calories of exercise a day as well, you'll lose a pound a week.

Simple and no surgery or faddy diets required.

Personally I do half an hour most days on the Cross Trainer I have at home (with a video sender so I can watch stuff I've got recorded on Sky+ whilst working out) which burns about 250 - 300 calories and twice a week I go to the gym and do Body Combat class which burns around 700 calories.

In a year I went from 12 stone to under 10 stone and from a 37" waist to a 31" waist.

My main problem now is actually that I've got so used to this that I've got to get into the habit of eating a bit more so I don't lose any more weight!

With regards to number2 in Grahamm's post I can recommend the myfitnesspal app for smartphones. Makes it very easy to track calories in & out.

Erm, not exactly. As mentioned, that was over the course of a year, so I was losing roughly a kilo (or around 2 pounds) a month. Now I'm down to under 10 stone (where I should be) I want to keep it there, but not drop any more.

Of course by losing it slowly you don't get the yo-yo dieting situation where your body goes into "famine mode" and thinks "oh-oh, calories are short, better pile on the fat at every chance..."
