whats the actual score with Sorn then, my understanding is that it is what it says.....ie its off road
are you or others on here saying it can be physically kept on the roadway but not driven as long as its mot'd and insured?
I thought it meant that you couldn't keep it on a roadway if it had no tax so Ive struggled to get it up a tight driveway (scraped it a few times in the dark ) and basically kept the bike in the garage due to all the arseing about

No, unfortunately it's gotta be off road. I know a few people that keep their untaxed cars parked on the road, but you run the risk if reported of getting clamped, paying the overdue tax, and possibly even getting a court hearing hith a £1000 fine, or getting your car siezed and crushed by request of the court if it's that far overdue or you can't pay up.

The only time it should be on the road with no tax is if you're driving it to/from an MOT.  As you say if it's SORN then it should be off the road.

Yeah  - like sitting in my blind spot for 10 minutes and then coming alongside making me nearly shit me-self and crash (I startle easily).

Erm, so maybe you should check your blind spots a bit more often...?

It was this incident just after I got my licence that made me check them religiously from then on

funny this came up, my bike ran out of insurance in mid august whilst I was away, as bike was in bike shop for service and didn't pick it up till september my mate took it home in his van. so now its sitting MOT & Tax on the drive. not been riden when I get a lettter saying that unless I insure it or SORN it I could get fined. so I SORN it & surrender tax disc and wait for the refund!

Yeah my son had to do this when he took a 'break from driving' for 6 months  handed in his tax disk and got a refund. It's a bit of messing about, but at least you get some of your money back.

That's the continuous insurance thing that was brought in at the beginning of 2012.  Stops people insuring it, getting tax then cancelling insurance.  Or just not re-insuring it when it comes round.

so I go on line & send V14 & old tax disc off to DVLA, on the V14 it says do not communicate with DVLA until 6 weeks have gone past!
Initial letter dated 16/11/12
Posted tax disc etc 28/11/12
get a letter from DVLA dated 17/12 stating that this is an offence and to avoid prosecution I must pay fine of £100 by 25/1 or £50 by 18/1 unless I either insure my bike or prove it has been sold / stolen etc or if I can prove I SORN'd it!
<< please enclose a copy of the acknowledgement you got from DVLA to confirm this. If you did not recieve confirmation then you are still liable for the offence>>
so after ringing 3 different numbers actually got to speak to a very nice lady at DVLA who confirmed that they had recieved the SORN and the notification shouldn't have been sent and would update the system and also that my TAX disc refund would be sent within 4 weeks
 
the thing is if I hadn't have had the facilities to beable to do this during works time I would have had to either pay the fine of face prosecution also as I have been proactive in responding to these letters how come there are so many insured vehicles on the roads, why aren't the owners been fined etc....

You've not had it good with regards to DVLA! ! They're normally pretty good at getting this right. Sounds like the automated system is not talking to the operators and vica versa by the sounds of it.

I presume you meant by the above quote "uninsured"? Criminals find lots of different ways of getting round the system, mostly by owning and temprarily insuring/MOT/taxing a car, then passing it on a few times without re-registering it as they know that the courts are always playing catch up and are quite slow to fine people.

yeah I seem to have to have fallen foul of IT systems I think rather than people failure, as the lady was most polite & I think surprised when I wished her a Happy new year
