Sorn?
« on: 14 December 2012, 12:23:03 pm »
sorned the lads car the other week, eventually he goes and retaxes it and gets a pull as its showing as being sorned. Cops are ok when they see the tax in the window but asked him if he'd notified anyone (DVLA?) that it was not sorned anymore
now I was under the impression that once you taxed it again, it was blatant too all concered that it couldnt be on a sorn and Ive never had any comebacks when sorn/tetaxed the bike
anyone know different or was the cop getting mixed up?

I thought that by taxing it you were notifying the DVLA that it's not SORN  :look   Mind you, given how useless the DVLA are it probably just hasn't been updated yet.  Give it a few months.

Many may already know these, but in case not got some nice links for you.

You can check the TAX database online here (click vehicle enquiry):

  https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/app/home/intro

And you can check MOT status and history here and here:

  http://motinfo.direct.gov.uk/internet/jsp/ECSID-Internet-Status-Request.jsp

  http://motinfo.direct.gov.uk/internet/jsp/ECHID-Internet-History-Request.jsp

And finally you can do a simple yes/no insurance status check here:

  http://ownvehicle.askmid.com/

AFAIK all connect to the same databases the police use, so you can anticipate if you're going to run in to problems with ANPR.

To clarify these are all official sites rather than third-party commercial services.

I'll be honest with you maddog, the police mobile terminals are sometimes a little out if date. It all depends on what type of cop pulled the car (traffic/response/other), and what checks they have done.
As for notifying DVLA, well the tax disk itself is proof of that. Sounds like it was possibly an inexperienced cop that looked into it.
What was the cops outcome at the end of it? I'm quite interested.

If its off road, it needs to be SORN or u could get a fine for no insurance. They dont care that its not on the road.

The Police terminals are only as good as the updates. Should be done over phone internet but doesnt always work.

If you use the tax on line you can enquire if any car or bike is taxed as long as you know the make and reg. I have used this to see if some of the cars/bikes are dead or alive, one car I owned in the 80s (triumph vitesse) is still taxed, but has changed colour from blue to yellow.

If its SORN'd and you drive on the road, then its a DVLA issue where they chase you for the back payment. All the cop does is report you for it. He can't do you for no insurance (that's if you have any).
As for the car terminals, they have to be downloaded via hardwire every day to update the vehicle database.
And the reason I know this is......... Well you can imagine what I do for a living. :rolleyes

Yeah  - like sitting in my blind spot for 10 minutes and then coming alongside making me nearly shit me-self and crash (I startle easily).

Isn't the nick-name something like 'road-rats' or 'black-rats'? Can never remember - something plague carrying anyway :P

Na, I'm just a commuter/fun biker. I probably ride just as bad as everyone else on here :lol :lol :rollin
As for the job, I normally have nothing to do with traffic stuff, unless ofcourse it involves blatant stupidity.

I dont understand how an uninsured sorned vehicle if stopped on the road would not be seized ?..its still an uninsured vehicle after all?

If so its an absurd loophole....and maybe why so many uninsured vehicles  continue to be  driven on the road....

No I think you've got the wrong end of the stick Pitternator. If its uninsured, then it gets seized under section 165 Road traffic act AND a ticket which is 6 points + £200 :eek. No tax and it gets reported to DVLA for them to take action. No MOT and its a £60 ticket, no points.

I think that's pretty prescribed country wide, maybe with slight regional differences.
