Who's got and want to show us their......
« on: 05 November 2012, 05:30:32 pm »
handguards ?

Been toying with this idea and since the last couple of weekend ride-outs have made my hands cold in about 40 minutes (refuse to wear all the thick Winter clobber just yet)
I wonder firstly, how effective they are and how much they do or don't suit a Gen 1  Fazer...

Seen some LED jobs on ebay for about £30-40, dunno how you are meant to tidily hide the wiring though, but for argument's sake, any guards will do for pics.

Suzuki dl-650 ones seem to be the guards of general choice, I have them on mine an doften don't need to turn on the heated grips, but then again if its that bloody cold I tend not to go out!!

Dl650 on mine to. Work ok but when it gets realy cold I swap to the oxford bone dry muffs. Look crap but toasty warm and 100% dry hands in summer gloves.
Made a metal frame for them to stop them folding in at higher speeds though.
Might see if the will fit over the dl650 guards this year. That would solve all the issues.

Hmm, cool, tomlinscote - what bars are on yours, they look further in and lower than I expected, probably as I've looked at too many web pics of handguards on bikes - mostly on adventure types.

They are the standard bars, but rotated a little, the screen and the guards are the only mods on this 2004 gen 1, it has only had the pads and chain n sprockets changed the once too, still going strong :)

Yeah it looks good. I will add the link of the universal ones I've seen, easy clamp fit round the bars.
I don't do much winter riding really and can't be bothered with the muff things, but if the guards keep the wind off a little with Winter gloves, I'd be happy, plus they personalise the bike a bit.

fazer69 has posted pics of a very neat job he did fitting the DL650 handguards, I cant take any pics today cos its pitch dark and rainy, but I had to fit aluminium extensions to mine whereas fazer69 didn't so you'd be better off finding his photos. you can search the forum using a posters name so that would be the way to go :)

Brilliant, I quite like them, but then again after reading above I looked into these muffs and I may try a set of second hand ones, see how I get on, I do hate thick winter gloves for operating switchgear etc..
Hmm. I could easily remove them again after winter too.

Good idea, both! Let us know. To be honest I think the Suzuki ones look a little angular, some really nice aftermarket ones for similar or less money around.

Well, I used the bike for work yesterday and had to do a 50/60 mile round trip after work to see my Grandad, first time I've ridden in the cold and dark for ages.

Wrapped up warm and got my winter gloves out, wasn't too bad, but by the end of the half hour journey my fingers were starting to feel it.

Definitely gonna have some handguards or muffs ordered soon, as I don;t mind riding in Winter as long as it's not gritted out, it's just my hands and feet that call time on weekend winter riding.

Some decent cold killer socks and muffs should prolong the time I can manage out on the bike!  :)

heres mine, acerbis road handguards, take about 5mins to fit, do a good job of deflecting wind and rain. not as big or effective as the dl650 ones but look alot nicer. They do hit the screen before full lock but dont when riding.

They look good tommy - Jeeeesus, what a screen that is! I am still coming to terms with the extra wind blast compared to my old sportsbikes, I guess that screen sorts it out.

They keep the wind off well then?

I use gerbing heated gloves which work well without handguards but better with.  Screen is a cee baileys one, great for keeping the cold off your upperbody, can be a bit "buffety" though and looks naff.

Ha ha, I know that feeling, I usually go out for a christmas day hack, when the roads are dead - if no snow or grit...

I think I am signed up to the muffs for the winter and maybe some aesthietically pleasing guards next year.
