You do not need to be hot with electrics as all you require is one wire, three connectors a pliers a small wire cutter or stripper, roll of insulation tape and and a little bit of care and patience. If you have an 12 volt test light it would be helpful, but you could make one up with a small 12 volt bulb and a few pieces of wire.
I did this years ago on my 2000 model 600, however I would be very familiar with electrics and I can understand you worry.
Lift the tank and prop it up, open the box with all the electrics in it. There should be a 6 way Blue connector with a Green and a Yellow wires in it. This comes from the dip switch and the green wire is what you need to connect to the spare connector in the right hand headlight connector.
Lift the tank and check it and post a reply with pictures if possible.
