like the can but not sure the hanger works. are you keeping that hanger or knocking up something else?
seems a little out of position being that far up the can, but then with the can being that short its prob the best place to support it.

The stubby is nice tool. It'll warm Emma's plastercast and little pinkies up a treat if I had one fitted. She crashed her bike a few weeks ago and broke her right ankle.

That short link pipe looks great, probably could be a tad longer to bring the end of the can past the rear footpeg??  Just my penny's worth, how much to make one for me?

I like it, but would probably add a couple of inches, to take it just beyond the footpeg.
Did you have the pipe made up, or did you cut down a 'standard' one?
It shows off the single-sider nicely!

A very experienced racer/mechanic who's tuning work is feautured in Performance Bikes magazine told me that shorter "stubby" cans have the effect of reducing midrange. IF that's the case, it seems to be at odds with all the efforts of installing Ivan's Kit and going to the trouble of shaving bits off the airbox intakes, etc, only to throw power away elsewhere.

Can I ask a qn? How does exhaust pipe length make  a difference to power or torque I have heard about back pressure but never quite got the hang of it, if you didn't even have an exhaust manifold just let the gas out from the cylinder head surely that would be easier for the engine, and yep I get that you need to  control where the gas goes and sounds like but ideally........??

Looking at the two pics, long and short, I prefer the short but maybe somewhere between would look just right? There's no pleasing some people!
if it does cut midrange I wouldn't think it would be by much??? And............ the aesthetics can be more important when your doing a job like this than outright performance

Exhaust design is part engineering, part physics and part black magic. I am not an expert and it would be far to complicated for me to try and explain how it works, but there are lots of books on the subject, Motorcycle Tuning (Four Stroke) by the late great John Robinson explains a lot of it.


Every exhaust needs tailoring to the intended use of the vehicle and is therefore a compromise for road vehicles as the manufacturer has to cover many operating conditions. A Drag racing car with a Supercharger might use manifolds as short as possible to just clear the car, as things like scavenging, noise etc are of no concern


Cam timing, firing order, rev range, length of the primaries, length of the mid pipe, configuration of the exhaust ( 4 - 1, 4 - 2 - 1, 4 - 2 - 2, 4 - 1 - 2 etc) all have an effect on how the exhaust works.

Thanks for the reply, I looked up the book no Amazon its nearly £70 so it will have to wait a bit, but I will do some research for more info, always nice ot have some idea how things work!

Ah fuck the alleged loss of mid range, stubby cans rule!
Do I take it the shorter link pipe still allows the stubby can to miss the swing arm? If thats the case, how much are they Luke?
