looking on the yamaha parts site at suttons, they say the 2001-2002 brake disc is different to the 2003 on,dos anyone know what the differences are and will the discs interchange?

Think they're all the same, not a change of rotor colour is it? Honda and Yamaha (later R1s) have changed from year to year. Gold to black etc.

I think there IS a difference visually, but whatever rotor they are, I believe will fit all years of the Gen1.
Not 100% sure, but think the early ones are like the one in this link
http://databikes.com/imgs/a/c/f/v/g/yamaha__fzs1000_fazer_fzs_2001_4_lgw.jpg
while the later rotor is here 2003 on to 2005
Hmm, not able to get the link to work, but if you check out my '54 plate advert in the FOR SALE Section you can just about see the difference on the front disc.

The disks on the later Gen 1 have a different centre carrier which would make them slightly lighter, but they are interchangeable with the earlier models. According to Yamaha the later model disk superceded the earlier model disk
