hotgrips problem

Just wired up my new/secondhand controller all went wellturn engine on then controller seem to work then lights on controller went off but repressing up button lights back on but flashing then off anyone had this problem or is it knackered  :'(

need more revs to up the voltage, try holing the revs at 3k and press the button to turn it on..... or turn it on as riding on a nice stright road.

It won't work properly unless your alternator is charging - if your bike is idling, it might not be enough.
I get the same with mine (I take it its Oxfords you've got).

Does it work ok with your lights off? If it does then as suggested above it may turn off if the voltage is below a certain level to save the battery from going flat.

Had this problem loads of times with Oxford grips, especially when wired up via the loom or into an ignition live.
I contact Oxford a few years ago and they said that their grips are designed to run directly via the battery and not into the bikes electrics.
Since then I have always wired them up this way without a problem. Do need to give it some revs though  ;)

Oxford Hot Grips are designed to be connected directly to the battery and if you leave them on by mistake, they will switch themselves off before the battery is flattened - IN THEORY! I tried it on mine a couple of years ago (on a different bike) and they didn't switch off until the battery was so low that it only just started the bike! So when I fitted a pair to my Fazer, I put them through an ignition-controlled supply (using a relay).
 
If your grips won't work with the engine not running, it suggests to me that your batteryt voltage is already low! Especially if it's the same when the engine is running. Put a voltmeter across your battery and let us know what the voltages are....

It would be a bit more faff, but couldn't you connect them via a relay linked to the igntion circuit such that they'll only be activated when the bike is switched on?

Just use a switched live off straight off the fuse box.

I added some pics that show how to pick up the switched live.  These are of my 2004 gen1 thou, but I'm guessing all the fuse boxes are probably similar if not the same. 

I did find my original controller needed some revs when the bike was cold to stay on.  The second controller I've fitted, after the first failed after a few years use, powers up on a cold tickover no probs. 

I personally wouldn't wire them off anything else.  It's the correct way to do it, butchering wires and no overloading any circuit.  And it's easy.

Get one of these, makes it very easy to grab an existing switched 12V straight from the fusebox.  The bottom slot is for the fuse you've just taken out of the fusebox, the top one is for the live wire you're feeding to the grips.  As the heated grips have an inline 5A fuse just use a 10A in the top slow of the fuse tap.


No soldering, no mess and about 1 mins work.
