The "x percent brighter" bulbs from Philips or Osram are quite good. I put a pair in the car and they are noticably brighter, chap next door with identical car even said.
"Have you got HIDs in this"
Downside is that they only last 300 hours (as against 1000 hours for a standard H1) and if you buy the very bright ones they will degrade your headlamp plastic cover (but my standard H1 did that anyway!) . Apparently they emit more ultra-violet than ordinary ones.
Having said that, headlight plastic in the year 2000 wasn't very good - just look at any W reg Ford Focus.
Buy branded ones ... there are a lot of well marketed chinese copies out there which are simply ordinary H1s/H4s painted blue.
On my 2000 FZS I did a complex re-wire with relay so that both lights are proper main-beams, but you don't want to go there .
