It had to happen sooner or later.

After 3 weeks of riding my FZ6 I dropped it doing a very slow u turn at the end of a dead end road!
My pride was damaged, but that was all, and nobody saw it.

Fortunately I was browsing the web a few weeks ago and came across this video which I guess many must have seen.


How to pick up your motorcycle

Put the bike in gear, side stand down & the rest is surprisingly easy.

What happens if your bike has fallen the side of your side stand? Yep, probably end up dropping it the other side too

I've picked up my bike before, with givi luggage on. I don't think I have super strength...

Agree with Tori, I especially enjoyed the add that came out in the video, bet they would not buy a bike that had been down the road, I stopped in a layby above Ullapool about a month ago (slight camber on it), put foot down and it slid out from under me, bike was right down on its side, grabbed bike by its bars and pulled it back onto its feet, mind you I am a right hardy foccer, lol.

Did it myself the other night coming out of work - that were embarrassing!
Snapped end of my clutch lever, but that were it thankfully. Still got a ribbing for it though...

yup! used this technique on more than one occassion lifting a fully loaded BMW R1150GSA, a heavy enough bike to start off with but add panniers and camping kit

It works very well

Yup, drop it on the other side and THEN do it properly.

Or just be more careful not to "overlift" it. Done it, unfortunately.

Just don't lift it past the vertical, get it most of the way upright then brace one leg and use the other to flick the side stand down. (Done that one too!)

Take up trail riding and you learn to pick up a bike like it's tying your shoe laces. (yes I know they are lighter)

A timely reminder. My phone rang this morning and a voice said, I need a hand, I've dropped my bike. Voice belonged to a lady friend who is about 5 foot 2 and the bike in question is a Honda CBR600. She'd wheeled it out of the garage and it toppled over as she was putting it on the centre stand. Deciding that I wouldn't always be 10 minutes away, I figured I'd let her do it as per the video. She'd seen the video and had already tried it. Only problem is that there's nothing solid enough to get hold of to lift it, it's all bloody plastic! Anyway, soon got it wheels side down and the crash bung had prevented any serious damage, a dislodged indicator and scraped mirror being the only signs.

Did it with me FZ1 once, I think the embarresment kicked in and I picked it straight up no bother !!

Well I have just joined this not so exclusive club , after a long ride pulled up in a small village at the shop for some pop and mars bars - thinking I had put the side stand out I started to lean the bike over whilst lifting my right leg ... the bike began to lean but did not stop but flicked me up in the air!

Bike was ok and the sheer embarasment gave the momentary power to get the bike back on its wheels - next day stiff as a board!!

What a plonker!

I have reminded it not to do it to me again and re introduced it to Mr STILL the rotary saw - I think we understand each other better now!
