calliper slider pin stuck
« on: 14 August 2012, 04:32:05 pm »
Hi guys. I went to clean up my calipers and change pads today only to find that the slider pin on one of the front ones is well and truely stuck. Seals are all good and im useless at bleeding brakes and want to avoid completely take it off. Im lamped and tried abit of oil and nothing (and yes i took the 2 R clips off first). Any suggestions that avoid taking it off or paying the shop to do it?

It literally is just a pin in a couple of holes, with the caliper bolted in place i'd be inclined to just give it a bit of a whack with some kind of correctly sized drift!  :evil
When you get it out, make sure you clean it up and lightly copper grease it to avoid it happening again.

How about some sort of drive? A thin enough screwdriver and some light taps from a hammer might be enough to make it budge. Mine were a little tight when I did my brakes last month but not impossible. Also, bleeding the system wasn't as painful as I expected it to be - much worse with my car.

Edit: What darrsi said :P He managed to post as I was typing

Tried the above. Locked the bars and gradually increased how hard a was "tapping". Problem is i bought the bike with only 7000 miles on it and dont think the pins had been out in 12 years. Guessing i might just have to bite the bullet and gwt the calliper off

If the pin is stuck solid i would imagine that the whole caliper might need a good clean up and a once over as well.

Personally, i'd tap a bit harder!

best thing to use is a old drill bit!! likes been said give it a good whack (use a small lump hammer if you got one)? ;)  put a smear of copper grease on assembly too!

A small soldering iron or soldering flame only heating the top where the slot is. And a drill bit to turn it

maybe try spreading the pads a small bit. if they're in tight they could be putting pressure on the pin
