Wind buffeting from standard screen!
« on: 05 June 2012, 06:51:27 pm »
I have a 2002 fzs600 with standard screen.  I am getting a lot of wind buffeting from the screen which is hard on the ears even with earplugs in especially when on motorways for long periods.  The buffeting seems to be mostly around my neck and chin area, I noticed if I raise myself up a few inches it gets a lot quieter.  Im 5ft 9 and my mate is 6ft 1 and also has a 2002 fazer, he says hes never had a problem with the wind buffeting and rarely feels the need for ear plugs.

Could a double bubble screen solve this for me??  I dont want to end up with tinnitus or whatever you call it.  Any feedback appreciated!

Thanks

What kind of speeds does it become a problem? I have the later FZ6 Fazer and find it ok up to 70-75mph, much more (80-90mph, winding on for overtakes) and it becomes irritating for any length of time.

A different screen may help, but equally some helmets are better than others as well.

Yeah its not bad up to 70 or 75mph.  Yesterday we did a about 250 miles of motorway with plenty of overtaking which was the cause.  I have a Caberg V2 Carbon helmet and have tried my mates Aria but there wasnt much difference.  Ive only had mine a year so am not keen on replacing it just yet.

I've got a double bubble screen and there's still a fair bit of buffeting, but if you sit back in the seat it takes some away. Don't think you will ever completely get rid of it.

Can start by having a look at these:

Yeah i got one of those a few months after I got the bike it did make it more comfortable.  Am thinking of going for the double bubble screen.

The double bubble screen arrived today from Powerbronze!  I put it on, the dark tinted screen with my yellow fairing looked good.  Took it out for a quick blast and its worse than the standard screen!  :'(   It has moved the buffeting from my chest area right onto my face making it worse even at lower speeds! Will be sending it back tomorrow and sticking with the standard screen.  At least now i know.  Wouldnt mind getting a standard screen with the dark tint though...

has anyone fitted an MRA type extension to the top of the screen? they seem to be very effective but not very sporty looking.

I have the same bike and problem, which appeared when i bought a posh £200 AGV. Its the combo of the bike and helmet for me, ride a mates bike no problems at all.
Ear plugs are must at all times for me to avoid the tinnitus.

I'm pretty sure I've got a double bubble screen in the garage ( for a foxeye 2002/3 ) that you could have for the price of the postage. Maybe a bit scabby but you'd be able to find out if you really need to go all hi-tech and get an extra flip visor type screen ?

I have just replaced my standard dark tint screen with the power beonze, for me it has made the longer rides more comfortable unless I do stupid speeds when the wind whips around the side and seems to hit my head at the side. thankfully I am a law abiding citizen (most of the time) and don't suffer the problem a lot.
I have the screen available on fleabay if your interested in a standard dark tint. Its not perfect, has the usual swirls from cleaning, but has no big scratches or cracks. If you want to make me a sensible offer I could take it off fleabay and its yours, would rather it go to a fellow board member than some stranger.

Hi Wilko,

Thanks for posting.  I had a look on ebay, saw a couple for 98-01 models but no standard dark for 02-03 models which mine is.  Is yours 98-01 or 02-03?

Sorry bud, I thought you had a 2000 model. Having re-read you do clearly state 2002, I need to get my mince pies sorted ....
sorry for the false hope.
