Screen options for a 2003 FZ1000S
« on: 31 May 2012, 07:21:21 pm »
After a short ride on the motorway on Sunday and suffering a considerable amount of wind buffeting I wondered if anyone has any opinion as to the best screen option to avoid this. I have a double bubble sceen on at the moment and I'm about 5'11" tall. Also the bike has standard handlebars but I find the reach to the bars a little uncomfortable, especially for some reason on my left arm, I thought about fitting Renthals but which model and are they any good?

Thanks Steve.

Mine had a double bubble on but the turbulence hurt my ears at certain speeds. I changed back to the standard screen and it's much better although not really tall enough as the wind hits my chest now. I'm 6ft.

Hi, I have  a givi but still get turbulence around the head, I too would prefer the bars to be further back and higher. A lot of people here like the 758 bars.

I've found the stock screen lets the wind hit you in the chest, which I prefer to round the head.

I've got Renthal 758's on and an unspecified DB screen and the bike is probably the comfiest I have ever had (I've had a lot of bikes) there is very little windblast or noise at all compared with the standard screen

if anyone can identify it from the pics I'd be grateful as its cracked and I want another just like it :)

I have a zero gravity db it's ok but still get noise around the helmet so I've tried a mra vario it's better but not perfect and I have a mra flip screen as per Yamaha flip and thats ok, getting a perfect screen is hard, what is good for one person is totally different for another.

There is no magic screen on the gen 1, i have 5 screens and all have plus and minus points.

the best ones i find are :
Double bubble (this is the best i have found so far for speeds 70+ but dose tend to buffet the head a little and exsess wind noise)
short stubby cut down street fighter screen. pretty much level with the fairing. up to 90 its very good, wind hits you on the chest and allmost no buffet or exsess wind noise. but once over 90 its trying to pull you off the bike :P

the MRA is expensive but lots swear by it in one form or another. its one of the few i have not tried due to cost of the thing.

Jazoil,

Your old screen maybe one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-FZS1000-FAZER-01-05-D-BUBBLE-SCREEN-ANY-COLOUR-NEW-/251073200312?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item3a752100b8#ht_1025wt_1414 as it looks quite thick acrylic.

As been said there is no magic screen, I have tried loads inc MRA Vario which I found too noisy.

I am 5'10" and I found:

Standard screen put wind blast on chest which then went up into my helmet and made my eyes water, also above 90mph gets hard to hang on for long distance work.

Yamaha/MRA touring screen, wind blast/noise around helmet and shoulders, too noisy for me. Sat up right at 90 + mph wind blast would grab the shoulders of my jacket and make the bike weave.

MRA Vario, found it same as standard screen with vane down or same as touring screen with vane up.

Skidmarx DB, far too noisy and too much buffeting around helmet.

Zero Gravity DB touring (the one with the extra wings on the side), rentahls and CRG levers fouled the screen, very noisy and caused the bike to weave very badly if sat up at 100 + mph (touring in Germany).

Currently use a Tech7 from a busters sale which I have found the best compromise for me so far, not too noisy and no wind blast buffeting around helmet, but it does limit comfortable sat up cruising speed to around 80-90 mph which is fine for me when riding in the UK. It is slightly taller than standard with a small flip.

Tech7

MRA Vario with vane upside down (worked better for me than right way up)

Zero Gravity with wings cut off for handlebar clearance

MRA Vario with top half of Yamaha touring screen added (utter crap, don't do it  :) )

Jazoli your screen looks to be the same as the one I just took off.  How tall are you?

The reason(s) I didn't like that one were the wind noise it caused which got painful at higher speeds, the fact that it caused watery eyes and then blew the tears onto the inside of my visor, and finally you could see the back of the clocks through it which doesn't look nice.

I find the easyway is to upload it to a site like photobucket.com and then click the insert image link and paste it here. job done.
but there are lots of other ways to, including uploading to this forum but i havent done it so cant tell you how

Has anyone tried putting spacers under the screen around the mounting bolts thus creating a gap for the air to flow under the screen. In theory this might give a more laminer flow of air and reduce buffeting perhaps.
I would try this myself but have tons else to do at the present time.

Copied and pasted from a similar post, earlier date.......
I LUV IT!  :lol
The only way I can recreate the noise from the taller standard screen is if I stoop into a racing crouch.  And I ain't gonna do that 'cos it's a Fazer 1000 not an R1.
Okay, I'm not in 'still air' at all and I'm gonna get covered in bugs, but for a 6'2" rider, the streetfighter screen is recommended.
Just take a look at how many taller screens (used once etc) are for sale - sometimes less is best - I occassionally return to the standard screen, but purely to protect the Sat.Nav from bugs and weather when on longer trips. (only 5 mins to swap innit!)

IF IT AIN'T BROKE, FIX IT 'TILL IT IS.

If anyone is interested I have a genuine yamaha touring flip screen for sale in good condition. I have got 2, one is on the bike which I have found is far superior to the standard screen. These are around £100  new I will take £45+£5 postage. Will post a picture if anyone is interested. ;)

6ft, and yes you can see the back of the clocks, I haven't noticed wind noise as such but always wear ear plugs and listen to music, I may just spray the base with frosting spray to make it like the oem screen.

Your the same height as me then. The pain I referred to happens at exactly 105mph (without earplugs) so it's not such a big deal ordinarily, the tears splashing the inside of my visor however - was.  :lol

I was quite surprised when I fitted a standard screen I bought on Ebay as all things considered it's not too shabby at doing it's job.  then again I've just come from a naked 1200 bandit so any screen is a bonus.

it's the mirrors that cause the buffeting as well dockumented - bin the mirrors and any screen is good dependant on how tall you are

Having removed the mirrors years ago (for other reasons) and been through a plethora of different screens I can't agree with that.
