wifi help please
« on: 19 April 2012, 06:45:56 pm »
can anybody help me with setting a password on a virgin media wifi thing. weeks ago i thought it was running a bit slow and both mine and the wifes wifi connections on the phones are slow too. i looked today at devices connected to this pooter and found our stuff and JA-KOMPUTER as well. i suspect the poles that live next door but i would rather fix it this way than go round and bludgeon them all to death (i am close to that now) help to save the lives of some bastards that never leave the house and chainsmoke all the live long day! my house smells of fags now as does the other side of them. me bloods boiling :grumble i thought i had set a password when we got it but obviously not  :grumble

just had remote help from a virgin technician and he took control and went to the d link site and found that there was no password. there was at the beginning a couple of years ago im sure. we have had a new modem since then so maybe thats why it had gone. new password set now so fingers crossed all will now be well  :thumbup :pc  and JA-KOMPUTER next door gets to live another day  :evil

Setting a 'login to router admin' pwd won't help much - you need to set up encryption (WEP/WPA or similar) - that'll stop 'em.

make sure the wireless encryption is set for WPA or WPA2!!!, with a strong password ie not a word that is in a dictionary.
if it is the neighbours then it is very easy to crack WEP encryption and if your WPA password is not strong it is also very easy to do a "brute force" attack to find the password.
keep an eye on who connects for a while to make sure its secure.

good luck

Mine is all protected but I still enjoy turning it off when not in use. I always imagine some hacker being in mid flow of some vital transaction.
I used to not give a foc, then I discovered Red Bull and now I don't give a flying foc !!!
