been clearing my mothers house over the last week taking a lot of stuff to the dump, i have known for a while that they charge for certain items but noticed today they are charging £4.80 each for tyres  ...the boxeye could do with a couple of new tyres but i am not paying £9.60 to get rid of the old ones. .  could this be the beginning of the end for home fitting ?...

I live on a city/ county border and the county tips charge for sheet glass, soil/hardcore and a number of other items but the city one does not charge for anything. You could try another tip.

If you use any branch of Universal Tyres, in the south of the country, there's a set charge for disposing your old tyres. You could cut them up with an angle grinder, black bag the pieces and chuck it in the landfill skip.

Unfortunately there's a cost involved in 'scrapping' a tyre these days (although I believe many are recycled in some way)  Even the tyre places that take the scrap tyres from you are charged for returning them, so if they don't charge you directly for it, you can be sure it's hidden in the price of the new tyre/fitting. 

The idea of finding another local authority that will take them from free is a good idea, some are now asking for ID to confirm you're from the local area.

At the end of the day, yes it's an extra cost, but it's not that big an amount.  Would it be highlighted as much of an issue if the cost of a new tyre increased by £5?  It's just another running cost - an extra £10 every so often.  I'll still be doing home changes as It's still cheaper than paying someone to fit them for me.

since the local council has started charging at the dump i have been putting all sorts in the black wheelie bin, plasterboard,loft insulation,garden fencing and even an old wheelbarrow,all chopped up in little bits,iam also one of those annoying neighbours that burns diy timber off cuts  ...probably where my next tyre will end up if i dont recieve a letter from the council beforehand  ...






still ...iam looking forward to the reduction in my council tax due to reduced services

Before you go down that route, have you spoken to your local bike shop? they should be able to do it for less than half that.

jokes aside, the fumes & smoke that come off burning tyres is very toxic. You run the risk of a big fine or worse!

Yup you can bag em, but you might also find your local tyre fitting centre has a big pile of tyres sitting in their yard.  I wouldn't imagine they would notice an addition or two.  Bear in mind they will probably also have CCTV.

Not suggesting I’d do such a thing but instead of cutting up, rope around the tyre to fold in half and it will fit in the black bin....

I can see the rope snapping when the bin lorry muncher clamps down on the bag and the whole tyre flying out and taking the head off the bin man - sorry household refuse removals technician.

Your lucky. I amon the border of Surrey and Sussex. Both Counties tips check ID before allowing you in so I am stuck with the West Sussex ones. My closest is currently shut due to a fire so off I trot i my van to get rid of an old fridge to Horsham. Sorry - too tall (2.2m height limit and my van is 2.25m high) so asks them where I shoudl go. Burgess Hill. So off i trot only to find they also have the same height limit but will open the barrier for me to get in if my van is under 3000kg. No problem, wheres the scales? No, we go by the GVW plate. Bollocks. My van is 3300kg on there wvwn though it is empty bar the fridge, they wouldnt let me in.
So, fridge now sat in my front garden hoping a passing pikey will take it away.

I'm sure there's probably some rule that says your not supposed to but I always just pour my used oil back into the empty container after the change and then put it in the wheelie bin 🤷‍♂️
