clicking pump after carb rubber change?
« on: 11 April 2012, 11:56:38 am »
just wondered if someone could point me in the right direction. I have fitted new rubbers to the carbs(engine side) and a new fuel filter as my bike  was stopping at the lights and surging at times. after refitting the carbs i noticed two pipes coming from the rear of the carb bank which fit to a swivel type joint looks like a bar which runs the length of the carbs on the air box side. i wondered if these were breathers so tried starting the bike and when the ignition is turned on the bike tries to fire but the fuel pump continually clicks. obviously from my  description i'm a novice mechanic  so you will have to make it simple. Thanks rob

sounds to me like you have mistaken the fuel inlet from the filter/fuel pump for a breather hose. There is a rubber pipe that comes from the centre of the carb bank, usually covered with a reinforcing spiral of black plastic, that needs to be connected to the fuel pump. If this is not done then the pump will keep clicking when you turn the ignition. From memory there are only two breather hoses that come out the bottom of the carbs.

Thanks for the reply,  iv'e just had another look & i have fitted the fuel inlet pipe. the two pipes i coudn't sort out are probably breather hoses if there are two on the carbs, they are the same size as the two pipes coming off the bottom of the tank. just need to sort the clicking fuel pump, i assume it's something iv'e done or failed to do when putting it back together?

The obvious question has to be "did you turn the tap back on?"

Sounds like the fuel tap to me. I made the same mistake and found a list of posts which I read on here and it would seem to be a schoolboy error most people have made at least once in the past!! :lol

If it's not that, it will be a kinked hose. The pump is basically starved of fuel and the clicking is when it's pumping air though. This should lead you to check everything 'upstream' from the pump to see why it's being starved of fuel.

Iv'e taken the tank back off  and rerouted the fuel hoses and checked the tap all seemed ok but when i tried it the bike fired first time. i must of kinked a hose somehow as you suggested thanks for the help, much appreciated.
